Found this pic. buried in the Tenere archive regarding seal removal. I drilled a small hole 3/32 hole ( being careful to not drill to deep and touch the inner bearing race) a small pull on the screw and the seal comes out pretty easily.
Just note how deep the original seal is installed as there is no bottom ridge to drive the new seal into. It can be installed to far in and which means starting over. I used the old seal and a plastic headed hammer to carefully drive the new seal into place to set it to the original depth.
It’s interesting that the old seal and it’s running surface were in good shape. This oil seal has an inner and outer lip to it. The inner lip is the oil seal part and the outer lip is a dust seal. What I did notice was that there was an accumulation of dirt between the two seal lips which I suspect was causing the leakage. So cleaning of the seal with a seal saver or such as others have
suggested is the first and easiest thing to try if it’s leaking.
And I think a small amount of oil will leal out if the final drive is on the bike and the seal is removed. As the final drive is pretty easy to remove and get on the bench and that was the route I took. Repair was done about 45,000 km back and no leaks since.
