Re: Where is the thread for Final Drive Fluid Change?

There is some info somewhere, but I don't remember exactly where. Remove the filler bolt (6 mm hex head), then the drain bolt (17 mm) ... drain 'er out.

Replace drain bolt (23 Nm), add 200 ml ..... that's about 6.7 oz I think .... better check it out .... I use a 60 ml plastic syringe ... lock 'er back down. 23 Nm.

I'm going from memory here ..... that's about it. R

It's in your owners manual. But pull drain bolt, then put back in. Fill final drive until fluid runs out the fill hole, put plug back in and ride. I just used the gear oil bottle with the spouted tip to fill it.

Its pretty straight forward....as described above. I used Mobil 1 75-90w Gear oil...it doesn't take much. just a few squirts from the bottle.

Yes, good point. You don't need to measure. If your bike is level (centerstand), when the oil comes up just to the edge of the fill hole, that's the right amount. You're good to go. ::008:: R

Sometimes post photos because they enhance the explanation.

Re: Where is the thread for Final Drive Fluid Change?

Old thread but I had my Tenere up on the lift doing an oil/filter change and figured what the heck, I might as well change the drive oil as well even though it's not due (I'm at 8k mi). Holy hell, even with my flexible funnel it's hard to fill that thing. I measured out 200ml (per the service manual) and it seemed like an awful lot leaked out (yes the bike was level/vertical). I guess not as much drained as you'd think.

BTW, if you do your own oil changes, etc and don't have a lift - well worth the investment. Especially if you have an aftermarket skid plate that needs to come off. My back is thankful.

She gets new shoes next week and and brake fluid flush and then put up for the winter (damn you guys in the "ride year round" climates :-[)

I use a squirt tip from another bottle. Don't need to measure it because it is at the right level when it is at the bottom of the thread.

So the allen head on my oil filler bolt is about stripped. Anyone know where I can order a new one from? Google doesn't seem to know.
Partshark, Partzilla, ebay vai Partzilla, Boats.net, etc. About $8 USD plus shipping, which will probably cost more than the part. Or, your dealer can probably order one for you. Possibly for less if they don't add on shipping costs because it's part of their regular order. Might take longer though.

If you're talking about the filler hole on the Final Drive, it's P/N 90340-14002-00 LINK

Edit - A good hardware store can probably find you a generic bolt and some crush washers too.

Tried to do a service on the final drive yesterday. Was able to release the drain plug but the fill plug would not budge. I bought my 2013 ST slighly used < 30k KM on the ODO. Tried different approaches- breaker bar, release solvents, etc. Only option is to have dealer do the work, in case the nut breaks but I bought fresh fluid, gaskets, etc. Any suggestions ??

Are you saying a hardened 3/8" drive allen socket and breaker bar would not get it loose? And how long is your breaker bar?

Can you see a copper washer between the plug and case?

It gets heat cycled, but it would have to be vastly over tightened to be a problem. Not that it couldn't be just that. Usually the crush washer prevents damage to the case.
