So far I have always changed my oil filter every time I did an oil change but the service plan only calls for it every other time. What do people do?

Every other time on diesel landcruiser with 5k kms oil change interval. Has a bypass filter so if blocked or full at first 5k kms I would know. Also very expensive filters.

On bikes I change the oil filter MOST of the time. I do 5k kms oil changes so not that important. I also get rid of bikes before 50k kms anyway so not too concerned about longevity. Haha

Every time @ 4k miles. Also do the final drive at the same time.

Followup question: Do you replace the crush gaskets every time, or less frequently? (Both oil plugs, and rear drain and fill plugs.) If I have them on hand I will change them, but you have to remember to order them and I have reused them with no leaks. They definately torque down differently when new.

Filter gets replaced every oil change unless I hit the 5k change interval during a long ride. Then I'll just do a drain and refill only. Typically in a Walmart parking lot where I buy the oil (Mobil 1, 15w50) as I can recycle the used oil there also.

I get the whole "better safe than sorry" thing, but really...the engineers who designed this thing had some reason for recommending filter changes every other oil change, along with a recommended shaft oil change every 19,000 miles. They could have easily said "every oil change", especially in light of the fact that they'd potentially be able to sell twice as many filters that way, but they still came up with the "every other oil change" interval. Same with the shaft oil; they could have said to change it at every oil change, and they'd have potentially been able to sell almost five times as much Yamalube gear oil, but they still came up with the 19,000 mile interval. I'm guessing there's a reason for that, the same way there's a 26,000 mile interval for valve checks (which pretty much no one ever wants to do more often than they have to, and some don't do it at all). I wish we had an actual Yamaha engineer on the forum, because I'd like to ask him why they have the "every other" interval.

I normally reuse crush washers, but I would sand both sides of them down a little to remove the previous impressions left by the drain bolts before I reinstalled them, to give them a fresh surface to crush against. I recently bought a bag of 25 M12 crush washers from Amazon for seven bucks, so I guess for a while, I'll treat myself to new ones.

I do every other time at 4000 mile oil change interval as Yamaha recommends, change the rear drive lube every 16k. I don't believe changing earlier than recommended does any good, 6 oz or whatever of dirty oil is nothing as there is much more dirty oil that doesn't drain trapped all over the engine.

I used to change it every time. Now I am lazy and do every other oil change or once every 2 years. By just changing the oil, I do not have to take my skid plate off and it makes everything easier.

I cut open the OEM Yami filter that was installed for 2 years and it looked great at the end of the two years. There was almost no visible dirt build up, the filter material was not weakening and both the seal and anti-drain back valve were still soft and pliable. With filters of at least OEM quality, I now have zero problem changing the filter every other oil change.

There was a time that I was considering cutting a U-Shape opening out of my skid plate so I could access the filter and change it every time. Seeing how good the filter looked after 2 years, I no longer have any interest in doing that and will happily appreciate the extra protection the full skid plate provides.
