Farkle Time

Hi, I'm about to pull the trigger on a ST and have read with great interest all the information here on the forum about bags, windshields, crash bars, etc.
No end to the amount of information (and opinions) which is huge for folks new to the ADV side as I am.

I plan to be solo most of the time, two-up for short trips and around town. I'm 6'4" (35" inseam) 200 lbs, and will need all the "tall guy" mods I can find, flat seat mod, taller windshield, bar risers, etc.

After reading all the posts and watching all the bag tossing video's I've come up with this initial farkle list. Most likely in order of purchase.

1. Crash Bars - Alt Rider crash bars (only the lowers for now, may add the upper later for assy mounting)
2. BikeMaster Engine Guard highway pegs for the Alt Rider crash bar. (I gotta stretch out my new knee)
3. AltRider rear brake Master Cyl guard and Universal joint guard
4. Madstadt 24" windshield and Madstadt windshield bracket
5. Rowe PDM60 (need it to power my Zumo, Escort and Sena gear)
6. Bumot Defender Panniers and Top Box (a bike without bags is like pants without pockets)

I plan to use RAM mounts on the Madstadt cross bar for my Zumo, Escort and Sena gear.
I don't plan to be off road initially so no skid plate for now.

What have I forgotten?

Any "oh shits" for compatibility?

Thanks for your wise advice,
Sorb

Welcome from Texas. MY only advise is crash bars & skid plates. YOU pick the make/model, because it's YOUR bike; everybody has their opinion(s) about what is best.

Try it out first before adding any mods like the seat, windshield or adding risers. I'm not as tall as you at 6'2", but find the fit of the bike as it comes works darn near perfect for me.

I also recommend riding it stock for awhile to help you make good choices .
But the choices you have listed seem mostly pretty good.
The master cylinder and universal guards would be wasted money on my Tenere.
The flat seat mod really did next to nothing for me, I rode with a stock seat for 50,000 miles, it was always fine for the first 200 miles but after that it was kind of annoying. This year I started using a Corbin seat which for me is a great improvement. Supposedly a friend is buying a Russel day long seat and if he does I hope to take it for a test ride and possibly by one myself.

Great farkle list!

Once you get a few miles under your belt you'll figure out what's needed to "make it yours".

The only thing I would add, is as long as you are getting the crash bars, get the skid plate also. It is nice security over the stock one to have, even just for on road.

Doing only on road, I would not worry about the master cylinder protection, or the universal joint guard, at least initially. Mine had been down plenty of times off road, and those area's have not come close to being an issue with how the bike lays with my Alt Rider bars on front.

After the first 100 miles.

AltRider crash bar arrives Wed.
Flat seat Yamaha parts should arrive at the dealer today along with the Yamaha upper wind deflectors.
PDM60 (where were these when I was building banks of relays all these years)

Next:

2" Fox Risers and install kit from AltRider
Madstadt taller windshield with Madstadt bracket (the stock windshield looks nice, but is worthless for wind protection)
Then bags..........currently I'm still leaning toward the Bumot, I like the simple design and I especially like the way the lid opens to form a nice shelf.
My only concern is they are relatively heavy and I'm really trying to keep weight down as much as I can.

I won't hold the school against you....you ARE on a Tenere. I'm up by Ft Worth. Kerrville has some great roads to ride; my boys and I went down there for a weekend. THAT's where I learned that the Tenere is a wolf in sheep's clothing.
