Hi,
I've been looking for a factory service manual for my 2014 Tenere. I can find paperback but I want to save it to a thumb drive because I have been taking trips to the Arctic and I can't carry the extra weigh. Does the factory offer a PDF version of the manual?

So I know we can't link to or talk about the CD's being sold for $10 on some online auction sites. My question is if the seller is openly selling these CD's and Ebay is allowing it and they claim they have the right to sell the cd's, what's the problem?

My memory is that Yamaha never offered the FSM for sale to the public in any format other than the published book. Dealers were able to order the FSM on CD, and that may be what is for sale on the auction site, but in terms of having the right to sell it, I don't know where they would have gotten that right.

I saw a service manual on CD on ebay and it looked like a Chilton's type. I like reading it from the factory manual. With the paper manual being so heavy, I can't take it with me. If I'm at home, I can surf and watch a video. I see why the factory doesn't sell a PDF manual but they could've had a sale from me and I don't see a reason to buy the paper version.
Thanks for confirming the factory does not offer a service manual on CD.

If you absolutely need to have a service manual with you, why not purchase a paper copy legally and then engage a professional scanning service to produce a pdf copy of it for your personal use? Certain forms of copying for personal, non commercial use are permitted under US Copyright law (that's why you can DVR television shows at home), and the Fair Use doctrine even allows reproduction of certain portions of copyrighted material for commercial use under certain circumstances. You can engage a professional scanning service to produce copies for around $.07-$.12 per page, which means a 400 page manual would cost 48 bucks. There are lots of commercial scanning services on line.

You'd be violating the law if you sold your pdf to someone else, or maybe even if you gave a copy away.

You might be onto something. At first, I thought the scan might suck but if I cut off the binder (clamp in a mill and machine off maybe .050") then it should run thru a scanner with flat pages. I can also do that for free at work.
I'm liking your idea!!!

When I get a service manual, the first thing I do is separate it from its binding, punch holes in the pages, and put them in a 3 or 4 inch three ring binder. It makes it a lot easier to hold the manual open to look at when I'm using it. It also makes it easier to photocopy a couple of pages from it if I'm going to be getting the pages all dirty and greasy; that way, I'm not getting the whole manual dirty. I also always keep the front and back cover of the manual, so there's never any doubt that I actually bought an authorized copy of the manual.

I do know that Ebay tries to police what sellers are selling to make sure their legal. I used to sell a lot of sports tickets on Ebay and one time they kicked a pair of tickets to a basketball game off my auction because I had them priced to high according to the laws of the state the game was being played in. The way I figure it is that if the seller of the S10 service cd's says their legal and Ebay agrees and lets them sell them on Ebay, then I'm going to buy one and not worry about breaking some law that may or may not even matter. But then I've always been a real rebel. I rode 80 in a 60mph zone one time, carried a gun in Chicago and I even snuck my dog into a motel room.

I know a number of those CD manuals are outright copies of paper manuals, which makes them illegal. You also may order a manual for one model and get a manual for something totally different.

I've seen that also; there was a pdf online of what was supposedly a Super Tenere; it was actually a Tenere 700.

The manuals may not be complete, either. There were pdf copies of a V-Strom manual going around a few years back that lacked complete wiring diagrams. That may not be an issue for some guys, but it does lead you to believe that there may be other things missing from an unauthorized copy that you might eventually need.

I bought a paper manual years ago but also wanted a pdf. If you google "yamaha super tenere service manual scribd" the first link that comes up is a downloadable pdf of the gen 1 fsm. If you sign up for a scribd free trial you can download it for free, which I did. It's a nice copy - definitely not a scan of a paper manual. Legal? Not sure. But scribd is definitely legit and since I already paid for a paper manual I had no qualms about downloading the pdf.

All that said, I love RCinNC's idea to cut the binding off of the paper manual, punch holes, and put it in a 3-ring binder. Brilliant! They should sell it that way to begin with since the binding sucks anyway. Mine has pages falling out all over.

If you make this effort, I would recommend to put the pages in a plastic pocket, then in a ring binder.
Last for ever, but yes, much more work.....

Thanks, arjayes. This is how mine is set up:

That's a three inch, three "D" ring binder. The "D" ring binders work way better for a really thick manual; for one thing, they make it a lot easier to lay the binder and the pages flat on a table. That's the original cover from the SM. I keep the front and rear cover and the spine, and slide them into the binder sleeves.

The first section is a lot of stuff I've gleaned from on line (lots from this forum). Things like the tire removal tutorial from here, throttle body synch pigtail, stuff like that. The quick reference guide lists all the normal maintenance stuff like oil weights, tire sizes, compatible air filters, etc. I keep a copy of that on my phone.

I have the manual tabbed so it's easy to find the stuff I do most often. It can be a drag trying to find stuff in the SM, so this can speed it up. Plus, if you find something useful on line that supplements the SM, it's easy to insert it in the relevant part of the manual.

If I want to photocopy something and take it with me, this makes it way easier. It was also helpful in the past when I scanned a couple pages from the manual to email to someone who was on the road and needed the info for a repair.

Actually I don't recommend that. If you do it, you basically double (or even triple, depending on the size of the sleeve) the thickness of each page, to the point where the binder can't hold all of it. If you wanted to put the pages you use most often in a sleeve that would work, but it makes for a really bulky package if you do it for every single page.

Plus, those sleeves aren't cheap, and you'd need about 200 of them.

95% of the 2012 is same as the 2014, so the manual should mostly work fine. Service manual in PDF form for a 2014 Jeep Wrangler is 10,342 pages. Motorcycles service manuals are pretty lacking in info.

I have the .PDF Service Manual purchased from a Yamaha dealer here in Brazil. It was the condition that I imposed to buy the motorcycle. I do not know if it's cool, but they gave it to me there.
