In April of 2018 I purchased a new leftover 2017 Desert Sandstone S10. Love the color with the gold and bronze-ish accents. In my personal opinion there was just to much black. Now, i like black bikes, when they're all black. The matte grey and black, very nice. The early model blue and silver, awesome. And I'll single out Twinriders silver and blue bike, tops my all time favorite color combination but we can't get that here. Anyway, i decided to add some color to my already great bike. Here are the products i used and where i painted them.
I started with the front fender and stock plastic engine guard. I wasn't sure if i was going to like it so i painted them with peelable primer and then with the color i thought was closest to the Sandstone. I was a little impatient and the primer did a little orange peel effect and i still painted over it. It came out like bedliner but i still like it and some people think it's factory if i didnt tell them i painted it myself.

The gloss Navajo White came extremely close but it didnt have the sparkle or depth of the factory paint. Then i wanted to break up the black throughout the other parts of the bike. I liked that the factory made the engine cases a bronze-ish color and it matched the bronze in the lower part of the tank and on the sticker with the 'mountains.' I decided to try and match and blend those colors and spread it around. I found this

I couldn't believe how close the color is although it has a bit more 'glitter'or 'sparkle. So, i started with the leg guards by the footpegs and that slowly progressed to the grab rails, that went to the passenger peg brackets, then the windshield braces, to the handguards.

I think I'm done. Once you cross the line and it becomes to much. The black radiator cover and the battery cover are next. For me, something has to be done just not sure what it is yet, if anything at all? Maybe Altrider engine guards? Anyway, thanks for reading and have a great ride. Here it is as it stands today, with my new 10 mile old tires i put on yesterday

I like what you've done, and if you are thinking about doing 'something' with the fairing side panels consider painting only the bottom triangles the same colour as the tank, Sandstone in your case or in my case, yellow. I think it makes those predominant flat black panels appear smaller.image.jpeg

That's a sharp looking ride, nice job. The paint work softens the appearance of the bike. I think if you were to change out the top box to something more streamlined like a Shad or Givi and apply your paint skills to the new box that would complete the look IMO.

Thank you for all of your positive comments. I appreciate it. As of now, I don't have the funds for a proper luggage. Ideally I'd like to get rid of the top box and get nice aluminum side cases but that will have to wait. The top box is actually a 22 liter Rigid Home Depot tool box. It does the job for now. I did paint the original orange Rigid square on the back of the box with Rustoleum Carbon Black and put a Yamaha sticker over it. 20190624_074001.jpg

Looking back, I probably should NOT have used the Peelable Primer. It took about 5 coats to finally get the fender covered and ready for the gloss Navajo White. I should have just committed myself to the Navajo White and i wouldn't have gotten the orange peel. I could take it off and re-do it.
I like gv550 idea of painting the small triangular bottom of the side panels. I think it looks good and not over done. That is part of the problem when doing ones own painting, that fine line between nice and OMG WTF is that!!! Hahaha. I just know not to have to many adult beverages and look to hard into what might look good. Haha. The battery side oanel does have a lot of different angles and depth, whikenthe radiator side has the grill openings. There is possible potential or none at all. One day it'll come to me. Thanks again and have a great ride.
