Most private sellers are just that, individuals selling unwanted/surplus stuff online. With the modern day payment methods such as pay pal and Venmo it takes away most of the problems you expressed.
I’ve been on both ends of the deal. Yeah it sucks when you’re on your way to pick something up and you get a call that it sold. You can alleviate that with sending payment right away.

The poll was put up telling one side of the story-yours. After hearing both sides opinions changed.

You are not out anything. Why anguish over this? Usually there is no free lunch. The seller realized how much shipping was going to be and backed out of the deal.
Remember “You can be happy if you want to”.

Order you a new set and move on.
I disagree on a few points:

1) I am out something. In this case I’m now out the local set I passed over in the mean time, expecting to have these.

2) I don’t think Venmo and Paypal make these situations go away. It wouldn't have impacted revelations in shipping cost. It also opens a new can of worms paying ahead of time sight unseen rather than waiting to test ride, for example. I don’t see a distinction between backing out/refunding after PayPaling $XXX and backing out after agreeing to PayPal $XXX, which are both easy to do. I think this ties back 100% to how individuals conduct themselves.

3) My opening post was no story, nor was it embellished. Things were since admitted and explanations/justifications were offered, but what happened is still exactly as I initially wrote it. Proving whether opinions changed isn’t going to happen, but I have a tough time understanding why they would… and I have no doubt some people would be at odds with me on this.

I don’t think the revised price that the seller wanted was unreasonable; actually I think it was still good. I don’t deal with sellers that do that sort of thing out of principle (and experience), and I think that’s where I part ways in opinion. I posted this because I wanted to get a good gage of what the forum thinks of the situation and the response was pretty thorough. Its duly noted.

This is not really a question for cycledelic relic but a hypothetical only for the group to consider since we're beating this horse pretty good.

What if the freight charges turned out to be $45 less than expected. Should buyer have been refunded that amount or a partial share of that amount?
