Dear all,

My superten, Belgian registration plates, is weeping oil from the area around the dowel pin on the right side of the crankcase, just on top or the exhaust pipes. Yamaha dealer changed right side crankcase gasket a couple of weeks ago, done under warranty, but still leaking. Any ideas how to fix the problem?

Thank you for your help,

Roberto

Yes,

Ive read that there are a few Tenere's out in the world that came with dowel pins that where a little to long. I don't know if its the holes that are to shallow or the pins that are to long. Its not the gasket, its the pin... Take the cover off, get a new pin OR sand down the dowel pin 1-2 mm and re install it with a new gasket.. That will fix it for you.. There is one at the top and one at the bottom... Really easy fix... make sure to clean both surfaces good before reinstalling the new gasket.... torque to spec !

There you go :)

Or, take it back to the dealer with Tabascos fix in hand. The bike is still under warranty, so they should be doing it, not you.
Or that too ! ::008::

Being a Belgian, is yours a 2010?
Some of the earlier Super-Ts did this and you'd have to Google it, but I think I remember that the fix was to remove the cover and slightly shorten the alignment dowel.

Mine is doign the same thing (2012 black, USA). It's such a small weep that I figure that I'll ignore it until closer to the end of the warranty period. I was a bit pissed when I noticed it, but figured that it wouldn't be a tough fix. I assume that we're all talking about the same thing? Dowel/Pin? Mine looks like a bolt that is just above the headers where they flatten out under the oil pan. I see no drip residue on the headers so I'm ignoring it for now.

If anyone could snap a pic (doesn't have to be an affected bike) of the area we're talking about, that'd be great. I'm sure if I crawled around on a regular basis it'd be visible, but at least having a photo to peek at from time to time would be helpful.

In the very first post after the initial question, Tabasco layed out the problem and the fix. Did you miss that?

Karson, I believe they are just talking about the clutch cover. (crankcase cover #2) The dowel is number 17 in the OEM parts finder.

Nope, not the clutch cover. This is a vertical bolt under the engine and directly over top of the exhaust headers.

The schematic shows "dowels" as being #3, #17, & #27, but none look to be vertically oriented. What bolt are you thinking it is (if it's in this pic)?

EDIT: Here's a second crankcase schematic (different view/part #'s)

Mine leaks in the same spot, the bolt towards the front weeps .
the one back a couple inches doesn't.I 've had them look at it they said they removed and installed
but it still weeps.
Still 2 yrs warranty left so hopefully they can fix it.Its a very small leak.

I have a 2012 ST and finally developed this oil leak during an 1800 mile trip to Canada. Figured it was the gasket, replaced the gasket, but while do so I noticed a small crack in the alignment pin area on the cover itself. Replaced said cover, still leaking, so I came here to investigate. The long pin makes sense and probably explains why the crack propagated. Anyone happen to know what length a correct pin should be? Too short won't be a problem, but I want to make sure it is the aforementioned pin. Thanks in advance all.

Don't know the length but I'd just check the depth of the hole then grind the pin a bit to suit.

New gasket has about 20 miles on it. Would you replace it again since the cover is off? It went onto cleaned surfaces.
