Engine Noise

I have a 2019 S10ES I'm hearing a noticeable weird subtle "clickety rattling" type noise coming from the engine while accelerating starting at about 2800 rpm thru to about 3300 rpm, in every gear. Just started to notice this in the last 3 or 4 hundred miles, it could have been there since new just don't remember hearing it. Bike has 3300 miles on it. Out of those RPM ranges I don't hear it when shifting through tje gears. Bike runs great though with no issues. I purchased this bike brand new and will have the dealer check it out but I don't have much confidence in my local dealer for other reasons, but for warranty consideration may have to have them look at it. Maybe it's normal...Anyone experiencing this?

She's been describes as "agricultural", "rocks in a trashcan", "noisy as hell", etc, etc. I would hate to tell you there was nothing wrong, and then your motor seize up. But, making a bunch of noise is normal. . . . kinda "her thing". It won't hurt anything to have a tech look at it for piece of mind, but if she's running fine, I wouldn't stress too much.

I love her sound, others spend a bunch of money changing out the exhaust to change her tune. Good luck.

That sounds like the clutch rattle that many of us have. Mine hammers like that at the same rpm but only under a lot of load. If i *slightly* slip the clutch it immediately stops.

That clutch thread is a good read. The 2019 has the new basket which reduces it. The gen 1 was a chatterbox because of those yellow springs.

Yup the 1200 Tenere has always been pretty well known for being a rattlebox, generation 1 was worse than generation 2 but I find the rattling in both annoying. I suspect Yamahas next upgrade will get rid of the twin and replace it with a much smoother three cylinder engine. If I was buying a new ADV bike today it would most likely be the Honda Africa Twin DCT

Yes, if we only talk engine, I think Honda made a really good engine. (and now used in cmx 1100 rebel)
I once saw a video of the torque for the first 1000 ccm, compared to a S10 on youtube (did not find it now)
S10 had a little more torque of course, but the torque of the Honda was like a straight line up

And no noise what so ever:)

Dont forget as you have an ES with the ally bash plate it makes the bike sound awful. Take it off go for a ride and hear the difference. Folks on here have used Dynamat to to cure it.

I would like to see Yamaha work on silencing more of the mechanical clatter if there's a next generation Super Tenere on the way. It's an area some manufacturers have paid a lot of attention to. Notably quiet, mechanically, are the newer Harleys. You can't really tell most of the time because folks almost universally install loud exhausts, but I heard a stock one idling and parking the other day and was impressed with the lack of mechanical noise. I suppose it also helps that Harley uses hydraulic valve lifters, something I wish more manufacturers would do. Hydraulic lifters would eliminate the biggest PITA maintenance job for most bikes and there are ways to accommodate high RPM engines with hydraulic lash adjusters too, e.g. Honda Nighthawk 700.

I have a 2012 and it was horrible noisy. Of course i was coming off sewing machine in line 4s. After i changed the clutch to the 2014 it was much quieter but it still rattled. It has more of a ticking sound in the clutch instead of that hammer rattle. It is a rattle box of a motor. Took me forever to get used to. I dont think about it much now.

Mine has a rattle at 3k rpms also, no matter what gear. Its worse with addition of my metal skid plate but it has done it since I bought it. I just use ear buds.

I have a 2020 that makes the same type noise at the same rpm. 500 miles now. Bought new. Immediately noticed was noisy engine; Read up and seems normal. Does not bother me. Getting quiter with more miles. Honda engines are quiet in general; I have found Yamaha to be a better brand. Had an 04 Gl1800 that overheated and developed stress crack in frame - Bought new and never abused. Traded for 09 Harley Ultra Glide - Harley was more trouble free than the GL. Had an 08 FZ1 - Trouble free for many miles. Tried GL1800 again in 2016; Steering stem or rear swing arm creak that could not be found, Tire pressure warning on dash repeatedly (false reading), rear brake failure, trunk hinge and lock issues, etc. Honda was great while Soichiro was still alive.....
