I purchased a brand new 2019 S. Tenere in May. I have 500 miles on and getting ready to do the first 600 mile service. Everything great EXCEPT I am totally surprised how noisy this engine is, lots of clicking, clatter etc. My 2010 Harley Davidson Ultra Limited is quieter!
Is this normal for this engine? Very surprised!!

ya noticed the samenthing on mine and thought odd. When gets odder of you add a taller windscreen. Well I kid and its normal to hear the tires, valves, exhaust, engine of the st's big 1200. I also hear a bit of a slapping sound and its something to get use it.

It appears so. Mines the same. I just put it down to it being agricultural. I don’t worry about it, these bikes seem to go on for ever.

Why would you buy anything that was described by the manufacturer as "ultra limited"? That gives the impression that the object is incredibly limited in its abilities. Then I realised it was a Harley Davidson and figured it was just honest advertising. ;)

Oh, the noise is normal. Just think of it as the various parts of the engine letting you know they are there.

The Super Ten is a noisy engine. What you are describing is normal and nothing to worry about. It takes about 6k miles to really break in. At that point it will be smoother, but still noisy. The very long cam chain in the parallel twin engine is part of the reason for the noise.

I guess I'm the odd man out. I was listening to mine just yesterday, and was thinking about what people say about the sound. I like the sound. To me, it sounds "purposeful". The exhaust is quiet, but I can hear that deep thump. I've ridden boxer twins, vertical twins, V-4, I-4, and single cylinder. This is my favorite sound. (although I do like the sound of my FJ with a Vance & Hines under hard acceleration)

I've got over 221,000 miles on my 2012 and I'm still not used to that noisy thing. Tools shaking in a metal toolbox is one of the best ways I've heard it described.
To give Yamaha some credit though, My 2017 sounds much more civilized.

221K miles?! I would have never guessed it would last that long! Respect for you and the machine!

Pushrod engines are quiet. My old Evo was super quiet. And the Harleys dont have a gear driven primary. If my memory is correct, the S10 engine and drive system is comprised of 6 spur gears and 2 bevels gears And the clutch is noisy. Reminds me of my first time on a Ducati. The only noise I would listen for is for the timing chain. I rode an 2005 Electra glide the other day and it felt super goofy! The S10 has ruined me!

Wear some ear /noise protection , as we all should anyway, & you won't notice. Simple foam earplugs will crop at least 30 Db.

My 2014 ES is pretty quiet now & only clatters if I give it hard throttle from low revs. Spank my old Electraglide & it let's me know all about it, even on OE pipes, although the hydraulic lifters undoubtedly help reduce valve noise..

Yep. I knew that was coming! Lol! Forgive me, I'm just a long time Harley rider trying to experience something different for some adventures on and off road. Will definitely keep the Harley though...totally different experience riding it. But in the end it doesn't matter, everyone rides whatever pleases them. Just ride!

Good to know this rarely noise is normal. My 2013 was from the Touratech showroom and I worried it might have been abused by some crazy employee. Only 26,000 miles on the clock so I can ride relaxed now

The S10 is the noisiest bike I've ever owned. My last bike was a VFR750 with gear driven cams. Very quiet and smooth. The S10, not so much.

When people ask avbout the durability/longevity of the Tenere. . . . I use you, and long hall Paul as examples.

It's a "crack" bike. Once you ride it. . . . you're hooked. . . . gotta get a fix. . . . it's my favorite bike ever.
