Engine noise on cold start

Hello everyone,
My bike has been making this noise upon cold start. It disappears after the engine reaches optimal temperature.
It appears to come from right side, either from the transmission area or cam chain, unsure.
Is this something to worry about?

Doesn't sound much different than mine and i had the camchain replaced ( 45.000 miles ) 1 month ago. Tensioner is still the same, it was reset.

My bike, video from yesterday :

The noisier cold startups i've heard were mostly from 1st Gen bikes, much more chain rattle.

There has been a strange whining noise, coming from right side. I will try to make a new video, as it can't be heard on this one clear enough.
It's a Gen 2, at 34.000kms. Bike is due valve clearance check at 40.000; I was wondering if I should change CCT+Chain during that service. TB will be synched as well.
@sandro1973 I have been following your other thread regarding engine noise and I find that your engine runs a lot smoother in comparison to mine. This cold start whine has been bugging me, but then again maybe I am being oversensitive.

Try to start your bike in an open enviroment, less amplification of noise....this is from today's morning before going to work, the previous video was near a wall, this one is outside.

There will always be some camchain noise and also valve noise ( quieter valves are bad....it means they're getting tight ). I don't hear anything bad from what i hear in your bike or in mine.

I bought mine with 72.000 km ( or 45.000 miles ) and you never now the kind of use ( or abuse ) it had, even if it "looks" good. I also had no idea on what kind of sounds it is supposed to make or not make. It's still hard for me to trust everything is fine, but after taking to a good mechanic and the bike running better, sounding better ( less chain rattle but still there ), i have to try not to think about it and just assume it is a noisy bike and everything has been checked and tuned, since it was....and i'm a bit "paranoid" with engine noises...

Before having all this work done ( all 8 valves were tight, camchain was on its last legs, CCT was on the limit and couldn't stretch it more, 2 spark plugs had rust, FI bodies were out of synch ), i stopped feeling lack of power up to 3.000 rpm on the first 3 gears....pulls like a train....uses less fuel....sounds much better and has a bit less engine noise / clatter / rattle, whine and vibrates much less on acceleration, specially pulling from low revs in a higher gear. Pretty sure yours will also benefit from some fine tuning.

If you had your bike since new and know it better than i know mine, and if you're now noticing a difference, then you should take it in consideration when you take it to the shop. If you're doing the valve check, a new chain will cost you about 40 to 60 euros since the valve cover will already be off....why not....? I've never read anything about failing 2nd Gen CCT's, so i'm keeping my original.

Hello again,
I recorded a new video. There is a distinct sound coming from the engine right above brake pedal on cold start or after the bike sat for 1 hour or so. This disappears when once the engine reaches a certain temperature. Is it normal?

I honestly don't hear anything wrong with any noise...at least compared to mine. Is it something you never heard before ?

Being in a certain position regarding where the bike is, is enough to hear different noises from different angles, on some you do, on some you don't.

Well I dont know if it can be distinguished through the video, but there is a whining voice that disappears when the bike is warmed up. If I park it and restart after 1 hour or so, that noise is there again and this time more distinguishable
I can't compare it to previous times as I bought the bike only recently.
I will try to record it again :(

Ok, so you're in the same spot i was a couple of months ago....didn't know the bike or actual maintenance history, already had 73.000 km on its belt and some noises didn't add up to what i find to be "normal" engine noises. I took it to good mechanic, had everything checked, tuned, cleaned for my own peace of mind....engine had a clean bill of health and now i know everything is spot on....the bike feels MUCH better, i feel much better....and the noise it now make....i know it's just "regular noise" for this bike.

I advice you to do the same or all those doubts will just keep on creeping in. Take care of it and enjoy this beast of a machine. :)

The previous owner is a friend of mine but he didn't mention anything about any noise. So I am assuming either he didn't notice or I am hearing things :)
I will stick to your suggestion and have an extensive service at 40k; swap cam-chain, have the valve clearances checked etc.
Thanks for your kind wishes
See you around!

Less than 40.000 km and it was a friends bike, all good news....i wouldn't worry much, these things have a reputation for durability, just don't skip anything on maintenance ( like many do with valve checks ) . Mine never had the valve clearances checked and all 8 valves were tight, camchain was also on it's last legs. I didn't wait for the 80.000 km service, since i knew some things were neglected on previous services.

Thanks mate, exactly my thinking. I never skip maintenances. be it preventive or necessary ones. It just keeps my head clear of worries to follow the recommendations of the factory!

Hi!
I saw this thread now, I recognize the noise in your video and have the same issue/noise on my 2015 ST with 32.000km at cold start. Curious, if perhaps you have solved it?

He hasn't been on here since February 2022. You probably want to send him a message. (hold your cursor over his picture, and click on "start conversation.")
