Hey guys,
I’m getting a little ahead of myself. I have a customer that has brought me his bike. I’m in the middle of doing exploratory surgery. But we both agree that it sounds and it’s looking like it dropped a rod bearing. It sounds like serious rod knock. If that’s what it turns out to be I’ll write a longer post sometime.

Question, he is looking at a 12-13 long block to drop into this 2017. Just to confirm, can I throw this Gen I engine into a Gen II bike with cruise control, Etc. I would use the 2017 throttle bodies & headers.
I want to confirm that this should not be an issue.

Thanks

There were big changes to the pistons, heads, and ECU. Unsure whether there were big end changes to support all of that.

Probably the guy who posted on Facebook, definitely sounded like a rod knock but you won't know until you take it apart. I hope y'all come up with an easy solution.

It is. I’ve pulled the filter apart and it’s full of metal ‘bearing’.... pulled valve cover and clutch cover and it’s got ‘material’ everywhere. Customer looking to toss in a new engine but the 12-13 are a lot less expensive. I just want to confirm that 12-13 will work so I can let him know.

I know about the parts. I should double check and cross reference pistons, head to see if they are now the same or different.
Thank you

On the pistons, they interchange. Yamaha did this funky thing where Gen 1 pistons are separate from rings, but Gen II pistons come with rings. People have used Gen II pistons/rings in Gen I engines.

Other than upgrading the CCT, the engine should swap fine between Gens. The hard parts really didn't change, just internals and software. Especially true if you're going to use the Gen II TBs, so no worry about electrical plug changes for CC.

I would be curious if the upgraded head, pistons, and different power characteristics of the Gen 2 motor would match up to the ECU?

Looks like a used Gen 1 engine could save him ~$1,000 versus a Gen 2. But subtract from that savings your extra labor charges required. But come resale time I think he could lose more than that after disclosing engine was partially a Gen 1.

I guess it depends on how long he's going to keep it. I'd swap the Gen II clutch hub in and keep the rest of the Gen II for parts. Or not, lots of bits would sell, like Coils, Covers, etc.

Don’t often see this. Ready for the next slug to be loaded. Pulling out one, sticking in another.

He ended up finding a 2012 with 6K on the OD.

What was the verdict on the old engine?

Rod bearing. If someone can convert a short video let me know.

When I drained the filter this is what was left in the pan. Bottom of oil filter. And then the pleats of the filter.

This is his second Tenere, has has said this second Tenere always sounded different and up at the top RPM’s made a noise the first one never made. It was probably a defective part from the factory.

Did he got it brand new from the begining?
