It refers to when you roll off of the throttle, regardless of gear, the engine compression slows the rear wheel. I'm always in "S", so I can't advise the difference. This bike has heavy engine braking....I love it , and use it. It does take getting used to, but once you do, you'll find that your riding style just blends it in. It took me a couple of thousand miles to realize that with the amount of engine braking the bike produces, it only takes a light touch on the front brake lever to slow it down.
Like you I like the amount of engine braking on the S10 and use it every time I decelerate.
On most other bikes I have typically replaced the front brake pads every 20-25.000 km - on the S10 the OEM front brake pads lasted 85.000 km (the rear 55.000 km). The insanely long life of the brake pads on my S10 is surely a result of the effective engine braking.

I also like the extra amount of engine-braking that this bike has, and use it as an additional control function during certain riding situations.
Coming from another 1200cc Yamaha with 4 cylinders (FJ1200), the S10 has significantly more.
It takes a little getting used-to when I switch back and forth between bikes.
Same displacement, but night-and-day difference in how the power is supplied.

Definitely. Eric hit the nail on the head, big twins will always have more engine braking. But, the RT I rode, did not have near what the Tenere does. Maybe something to do with the 270 degree crankshaft?

Big twins like the S10 have some engine braking. However, most of the engine braking on our S10s comes from the ECU decel fuel cut off "feature". This can be remedied with an ECU reflash. I personally don't like all the engine braking, especially when riding double. Everytime I let off the throttle our helmets bang together.

Today we drive about 200 miles, with a friend who bought a used GS 1200 LC with 1500 miles. We did it by mountain route with many curves, ups and downs. I was behind him, and I Felt a rare sensation, the fact that he touched the brake on almost all the curves (we were rolling between 60 and 80 mph) when we stopped for a coffee, I told him as a joke, that if he continued to brake in that way , He was going to go back without brake pads. He told me that he needed to slow down a bit using brakes. I did not want to exchange the bikes, but we did a test: the two together at 80mph, in a steep descent, shutt off throttle at the same time, and as I expected, I kept delaying until we reached 40mph, he was about 15+meters in front of me. Conclusion, I love the S10 brake engine for mountain rodes. I hardly use the brake, except for certain occasions

ABSOLUTELY!! With the torque that it has....and the engine braking....and the hair trigger throttle....it's almost like driving an automatic. Twitch of the wrist....gas on....another twitch of the wrist....gas off, and instant slowing....another twitch....gas on, and powering out of the corner. Hey, wait a minute....this thing is supposed to be an overweight and sluggish dirt bike. Huh....twitch the wrist....gas on.....
