So Fabio will compete this season on the Petronas team to finish his 2 year contract, and will get full factory equipment support as well. Next season he will move up to join Vinales on the main factory team. Rossi has asked to have until the middle of this season to evaluate his future.

Rossi must know the score by now. Time waits for no man, even the GOAT. Careers may get extended in Road Racing, but rarely on the track.

In effect, he is already overstaying his welcome, but that was down to Yamaha honouring Rossi's past glories ahead of thinking clearly about their MGP Team's future. They may have to face up to the facts - sometimes you need to be cruel to be kind.

I feel if he did that he'd be just making up the numbers......I'd prefer to see him bow out after this coming season

No team would kick out Rossi. He still generate more attention and goodwill for the team/manufacturer than any other rider.
Unless he start winning races again, I believe that 2020 will be his last season - and that is why I plan on going to Misano this year, to see him race on his home track for what I expect to be the last time.

If I had the chance I'd definitely go to Mugello over Misano :)

As long as MM is around, doubtful it'll make any difference.
Mark wrecked his shoulder again and is iffy for the initial testing sessions this year. He could be starting the season from behind this year.

I remember when I was getting into watching MotoGP, it was annoying watching Rossi clear off and win races handily. And now that MM clears off and wins races handily, it’s just as annoying. I want to see the riders mixing it up and vying for the race win until the checkered flag drops. Dovi has been the most consistent challenger, but unfortunately he hasn’t been consistent. Consistency wins championships and MM is like a machine in that regard. I’m hoping Yamaha has found another 10-15mph on the straights to keep Ducati and Honda from just walking away. Fabio was exciting to watch last season (reminded me of when Lorenzo first joined the grid), and he certainly is the future of Yamaha (barring any repeat of the woes Ben Spies faced when he jumped to the factory team).
