Hey guys brand new to thread. Have a 2018 ST ES and was looking for some general advice on suspension settings. 3 settings from soft to hard and +/- 3 on all of them seems a bit confusing. I mostly ride pavement and weigh 180lbs, sometimes luggage, sometimes not. Suggestions?

Single helmet preload should be fine. Funny thing with the ES, i do change the damping around quite a bit, but sometimes if i havent ridden it for a while i get on it and into the ride i think wow bikes seems great today. Check the settings and its on normal and on 0 damping. I think the base setting is quite good.

Thanks! So you don’t mess with soft or hard settings?
Am not saying that but it is a good place to start. Dont forget when you add luggage or another helmet etc it automatically ups the damping to suit. I go to hard when im going fast to keep it taught if that makes sense. Roads which are up down and all around etc.

Play around with it a little. I find if I'm slabbing it I go with soft 0 or even soft -2. For fire roads with little to no washboard I go with Normal 0. Anything rougher than that or for serious twisties I go to Hard. I've left the preload on 1 helmet with luggage since I got the bike. Seems to work fine for most conditions as I'm 215 pounds and rarely load up the bike with much weight.

Again, play around with it until you find 2-6 settings you're comfortable with.

. . . . Suggestions?
Both fac191, and Bokerfork are both right. fac191 gave you a good starting point, and play around with the settings. Try soft, hard, +1 to -3. What you like, and what others like are likely to be a little different. I use 200lbs per helmet, and 50lbs for the luggage, which comes to the max of 450lbs.

200lbs here, and I'm still trying to find the most comfortable setting...so far when riding solo, it seems to be 1 helmet+luggage and Soft -3...

At 300lbs I'm assuming if you set it on -3 Soft you bottom out?
I have never bottomed this girl out, and I don't baby her. Even when my wife rides with me, I max the preload and adjust the rebound/dampening as the road(s) require. And she still handles fantastic through the curves. There's more than a few here that claim she's under sprung. I'm not one of them.

I also understand that the "ride" is a very subjective topic. But I can ride down a bumpy road with the cruise activated, and it doesn't kick off. Which means that the back wheel is staying on the pavement.

I'd say it's comparable to my Standard Africa Twin, but I guess I was expecting them to be a bit more comfortable, considering some owners were going from the Goldwing to the Super Tenere. Again it's by no means a HARSH ride, but I was just expecting it to be a bit more compliant on the bigger bumps. Roads around here make streets of Bagdad look like a bowling alley.

Maybe remove the "luggage" from the preload? It was counterintuitive, but when I stiffened the rebound, the ride got smoother.

I tried 1 helmet, 1 helmet + luggage, 2 helmets, 2 helmets + luggage. Soft -3, STD and Hard, I pretty much went full circle hehe I'll see how it rides with my gf, on the Africa, it rode smoother 2 up.

The wife and I were riding on a smooth paved road that had long easy "dips". Got to the bottom of the first one at 40, and got some head shake. By the time we got to the next one, I had stiffened the rebound. Barely even noticed it. So, I know the E-suspension is real. It just takes some time, and different surfaces to find what works.

im 85 kgs/ 178cm

bike has about 10kgs of accessories (crashbars, skidplate, pannier racks, toolbox)

preload...1 helmet, 1 case

general riding...standard +3

Gravel/ rough roads...soft 0

twisties...hard 0

sometimes if i gotta do hours on blacktop getting home (ie tired and cruising) ill set suspension to soft, windscreen high, seat high, cruise control set to 110kph
can ride for hours on these bikes

suspension is very subjective and you just gotta play around with your settings i guess

Rider plus pillion = 210 kg plus full loaded panniers 20 litre tank bag and 50 litre Yeti. On secondary roads with potholes. Use 2 helmets, soft -3. 100 - 110 kph plus. Nice and comfy. No bottom outs.
