ECU flash time

Getting my ECU flashed at the end of the month. One of the options is to lower the temp that the cooling fan cuts in. Any reason why I shouldn’t take it down to 100c ? Bike never gets close to that under normal riding but I haven’t taken her off road at all yet. I guess she will get hotter then.

My reason would be that the bike has been designed to run within that range. I've take my bike in some pretty tight tracks on hot days, and yes, it can be pretty annoying to hear the fan going all the time. But it will never get over 106 C . So lowering it by 5 C means it will run more often, unnecessarily IMO.

She has gotten very hot up until 108 in my case, it’s uncomfortable for the rider (sound and heat by on left leg fan). So lowering a couple degrees can be comfortable but an engine runs best at its designed temperature and I figure it is damn close to a 100.

I had mine set to come on at 205F and off at 195F. Works fine.

Yeah I’m thinking that if the bike runs normally at around 70 to 80c that’s because the thermostat is keeping it there and that therefore is the design running temp. The fan only cuts in once the temp has risen outside the design operating temp so if I can set it to cut in earlier it will stay closer to the design op temp.

A fan kicks in BEFORE the temperature gets out of range. And prevents overheating. Overheating is not 100c but higher because of the overpresure Allowed by the radiator cap. With that they create a higher operating temperature that is more efficient.

But the thermostat is what keeps the motor within the normal operating range without the help of the fan. Only once the motor has gone outside the range of the thermostat does the fan cut in as a backup. The thermostat tries to keep the temp down to around 80c

Yes Matt, that’s how they cooperate. My part was only about the fan. My point is simple: there is no technical need to lower the settings but sure you can without problems. She will run just as fine at 60 degrees as at 100 degrees.

My thinking is that because at normal pressure water boils at 100c, and the oem setting doesn’t activate the fan until 105c it means that if there is a weakness in the cooling system such as defective radiator cap spring or pipe there is already a fair bit of pressure built up but when that pressure drops the water will boil and exit the system

That’s about right, at a 105c you’ve got about 0,2 bar pressure. Do you have an answer or are you still uncertain what to do? In that case I wouldn’t lower it, because the fan runs more often. And I find that heat over my left leg annoying.

Good luck

I was looking to see if there was a reason not to do it. I haven’t found one so I’ll do it. The fan comes on so rarely that I don’t think I’ll notice any difference
