It would be interesting to know if Yamaha use different ECU maps according to the country where the bike is to be sold. It well known that Gen 1 bikes benefit greatly from remapping but it seems that the general opinion is that U.K. and European Gen 2 bikes appear to perform quite well as stock.
Good question. I'll bet there are differences in different regions. In the US alone there are both CA and 49 state compliant versions. I would not be surprised to learn there are differences in the ECU programming just between these two US models. This might also explain some of the differences in opinion about the benefits of a re-flash.

I also appreciate that the bike defaults to Touring on every start up.
This is interesting as the stock ECU remains in the last setting used upon start up. I've not heard of a re-flash that is set up that way until now. I would find this feature pretty annoying as since my re-flash I find very few occasions to use the T mode anymore. If fact I wish the TC would stay in whatever setting I choose and without a warning light.

Hmmmm. . . . ya' thinking that maybe the CA version the super twitchy one, and the 49 state is easier to use? If that's the case, I have to have a non-CA version. It would explain a lot, but I thought everything was CA compliant.

My 2018 “European” S10 has no issues at all in sports mode. It is downright a Beast which demolishes tarmac at departure.
Well, maybe a little bit less than that, but no complaints what so ever, coming from an ST1300 Pan European, also a Beast..
It does not perform less “Beasty”, at least not IMHO.. Happy as it is, does not need remapping at all…

After turning it on and off in the driveway a few times, I was like "What in the eff is this all about?!" then I rode the (new) Sports mode and I was like "Ah, okay!! Well, maybe that's a good call!" ;) :D

Touring is a really solid all arounder for me now. Sports reminded me of my experiences on the KTM 1290 Super Adventure R. Watch out! Ha ha!

Maybe. As far as them all being CA compliant, that's not the case for the 2015 models, can't say for later ones. When you go into any of the parts fiches online, there are four different 2015 Super Tenere model designations ES or not and CA or not. I've not cross referenced the ECU part numbers, that might be interesting.

I knew my ol' FJ had an extra part, and weight, due to CA, and non-CA. . . . but, I thought (ass-umed) that with everybody climbing on anti-pollution train. . . . everything (cars/truck/bikes) were mandated by now to be CA compliant.

The US part numbers are the same for CA and 48 state ECUs. There was the first 2012 part (23P-8591A-30-00) for all US markets, then a change to the second in 2012 (23P-8591A-70-00, with a processor change - possibly due to parts availability), then a change in 2014 to a third ECU part number (2BS-8591A-30-00 - needed changes to support cruise control and maybe the electronic suspension stuff). Those are the only US ECU part numbers.

Oh man! That's topping it off indeed! :D This forum is awesome though! I really appreciate the teamwork in catching that error for me! Tbh, I was rushing a bit to make it to the post office before the holiday closures and apparently thought my Yamaha was a Kawasaki for a minute! Ha ha! Live and learn. At least you all saved me time in helping me get the REAL (lol) ECU in the mail! ;)
Its all good brother. Things happen. I wish i would have been able to make it on that trip! Definitely next time

* UPDATE *
Here's a post ECU flash write-up following some proper cornering in the beautiful Texas Hill Country today.

Bottom line up front; to me, THIS is how the Super Tenere's ECU should arrive to its owner from Yamaha.

The power delivery is so much smoother! Every gear is strung together with a silkiness that was absolutely missing. Zero issues while negotiating during hard cornering. Transitions from fast trail braking into corner exit rips, was much more manageable and fun!! Additionally, you have all the power this awesome engine has on demand, with no discernable concessions. I experimented with both modes, but spent most of the twisties time in Sports mode. Touring is pretty much a goldilocks mode now. Solid all around option. The 2 Wheel DynoWorks ECU flash is well worth the investment in my humble opinion.

But wait! There's more...

I let my buddy ride the bike after our breakfast stop. For context, he's a seasoned road rider (incl. track days on his GSX-R 1000). He rode his MT-10 this morning. He's also ridden my S10 pre ECU flash. We were on helmet comm. while riding so I could capture his thoughts. Here they are in no particular order:

"Ohhh yeah man... much better."
"It's less boring man" (told him I took offense to that! Ha ha!)
"It rolls on easier"
"It's livelier man"
"The power is spread out better through all the gears"
"I wouldn't have overtaken that truck before you got the flash! Ha ha ha!"
"It's like the same torque and power but it's refined man. It's more smooth"
"It feels more like the MT" (10)
"I'm gonna look into getting mine done." (his MT-10)

If you have the opportunity to test a 2 Wheel DynoWorks flashed ECU, do it! It's worth at least trying out. If anyone has any questions about my experience, feel free to ask

Have a great week everyone :)

I have alway been annoyed buy the Tenere throttle and gearing at lower speeds, I have no interest in more horsepower. For about the last three weeks I have been exclusively riding the Tenere because been working on Goldwing Switches issues. Now that the Goldwing issues have been fixed it makes riding the Tenere more annoying than ever, I just might spend the money to get it flashed next winter.

Great thing about the flash is you can have it set up how you want it instead of riding around it lol.
Agreed. I felt weird even considering it initially. Mainly because I'm the "all stock guy" in my circles. I even had to eat a bit of crow when I did this mod, because a year or so ago, I told my brother that his FZ-10's fueling was fine. After more seat time on his bike, I understood his gripes more. Especially after ripping that beast through the Ozarks (!)

What also made me commit to the flash (besides the positive testimony here) was thinking about road racers. I imagine rarely, if ever, do they have to ride around any fueling imperfections. One size can't fit all, due to each rider's style and bike type. They're given what they need to be safe, fast and successful; granted, I'm a slow mere mortal and they're supreme aliens!

To date though, absolutely zero buyer's remorse. My S10 is so much more fun to ride! It really does have a euro premium bike type of power delivery now (fwiw). Again, hats off to Nels and company at 2 Wheel DynoWorks.
