I got a really awesome skid plate, but like all skid plates, its throwing more mechanical noise at me than before.

Had anyone tried throwing down a layer of dynamat on the inside of your skid plate to cut down on this?

Crazy idea?

And yes sure earplugs are one solution but i only use them for long rides and I prefer as quiet a bike as possible.

Ive seen similar material used before... It works..... make sure the inside surface is very clean,,,, wipe down inside surface with alcohol,.... once applied use a hair drier or heat gun (on low) to 'bond' the material to the surface... It will stay "forever".....

I always liked ripping down a dirt road or trail and hearing,................ dink,... dink,dink,............... dink,......... DONK,......... dink,........ dink....... CLUNK,........... dink,..............

My ACD skid-plate has some sort of thick, rubbery mat attached within that I believe came with the skid-plate
(bought my S10 used, skid-plate was installed by the P/O).
It definitely works as a sound deadener because whenever I change my oil/oil filter I completely remove the skid-plate
and then when I run the engine to get the oil dispersed the engine has that Soviet-era, agricultural equipment
type sound.... o_O

I have the oem gravel guard. I put dynamat on the inside to cut down on the clatter. It works to reduce the noise a bit.

I think this is commonly done. I used a similar material (cheaper) called GT Mat to line the inside of my skid plate. I really helps with the reflected noise.

Just a gentle reminder, hearing loss is cumulative and permanent. A quiet bike, even an electric one, does not negate the need for hearing protection against wind noise when riding. We all should be wearing hearing protection on every ride. And yes, I do. I spent decades in industrial environments were PPE was required. Most people never realize they suffer from hearing loss until it's far too late.

What? (Insert smiley here)

I lost roughly 30% of my hearing in the military, my earplugs always go in before the helmet goes on.

typically I have two extra sets with me in my jacket pocket just in case

hearing never gets better it only gets worse.

I too kind of enjoy the ding ding ping ping from gravel roads of the rock hitting the skid plate, I also hear a lot more mechanical noise reflected back up at me, from the skid plate on my DR 650

When I went into the Navy as a Sonar Tech, my hearing test showed excellent scores: -25 to -5. Upon discharge, six years later, my numbers were up to 0 to 10. Lower is better. About five years ago, I got a hearing test, and custom ear plugs. The doc said I had very good hearing. My response was "for an old man". He said no. Apparently, I've had very little degeneration in my ears. Which I thought was odd, considering the amount of time that I've spent on bikes. I guess it isn't as bad as listening to the ocean.

Absolutely! I wear ear plugs regardless of the length of the ride.
