Hello. I'm hoping to buy a Tenere soon and I'm planning my future storage needs. I'm looking at one currently that has no racks or side bags on it, but I commute on my bike so I definitely need some storage. Was planning on mounting some inexpensive dry boxes or maybe tool boxes in the place of saddle bags for the time being... until I can afford some nicer luggage. Is there an all purpose rack that can be used to mount such a box or are they all bag specific?

There certainly are a lot of very nice used motorcycles on the market right now, if possible I highly recommend spending more time looking for one that’s equipped closer to what your wanting, adding accessories after buying a bike adds up to a lot of money pretty quick.

These are racks made by Happy Trail. Right now, they run $289.00 on their website. I prefer them over other racks because they're made with square tubing, which makes it easier for me to fabricate things like luggage mounts to fit them.

They've taken some abuse over the last 55,000 miles, and the powder coating has worn off in a few places. This is my second set of them (the first was on my V-Strom).

This is my luggage system:

The top photo shows the Chinese knockoff pelican cases I use for panniers. These have been on two bikes now, for a total of 74,000 miles. At the time I bought them they were about 50 bucks each (around 2013, I think), and were being sold by MCM Electronics under the import name of Duratool. For the price, they were amazing; rigid enough to stand on them without deforming them, and waterproof. I made a custom quick release system to attach and detach them, but they could just as easily be attached to a set of Happy Trail racks using the puck system that HT sells to attach their aluminum panniers to their racks. The top case is also a Duratool.

The lower photo shows the adaptability of the HT rack system. It only takes a couple seconds to detach the hard cases and attach the soft bags, which are an old set of Nelson Rigg CL 800's ( I think that was the model number, anyway).

Edit: I looked the case up on Amazon, and it's now selling for $81.05. The one currently being sold by MCM Electronics under the Duratool name that matches the dimensions of my case isn't the same case, so I can't speak for its quality. It's priced at $81.31.

They're military surplus M40-M42 gas mask carriers. I cut off the waist and leg straps and the decon kit pouch, and removed the velcro strips that kept the flap closed. I used the straps I cut off to make a couple quick release straps for the flap, and a carrying handle on top. I sewed some pieces of two sided velcro tape on to the backs of the bags, that line up with the bars on the crash bars. The velcro tape wraps around the bars and keeps the bags secured.

They look like this in their original form:

And this is a closer shot of how they look now:

If you look close, you can see pieces of that two sided velcro tape at the rear and top of the bag, wrapped around the bars on the crash bar.
