They haven't been necessary for me. I'm closing in on 65,000 miles of about 90 percent street riding, and neither the forks or the rear drive have been hit by anything large enough that I ever noticed an impact. As far as the forks go, I am a believer in some sort of fork seal protector, like Shock Sox.

Neither area is particularly fragile. Shock Sox for me. It just depends on where you ride and how you ride. If you're banging rocks off the Final drive, maybe the guard is a Good Idea™. If you're following other riders close and rocks are being thrown back at your bike, maybe the fork guards are a Good Idea™. Otherwise it's just about how you want the bike to look. They function like they are supposed to. Sometimes needing something comes secondary to just wanting it. Others are all about function and if it has no function for them, it's not on the bike. Neither concept is wrong, just personal taste.

I bought a set of fork guards but never installed them but later bought and installed a set of shock socks.

i suppose there is a remote chance that final drive guard might help but it seems pretty unlikely to me, I don’t have one.

Got both on mine. As I only ride on road, purely cosmetic but I like the look of them especially the fork protectors.

The rear shaft protector makes rear wheel removal a bit more awkward

Those aluminum fork protectors are cosmetic and will damage other parts like bolt wells in the fork tubes. OEM fender is designed to break away and only 150 bucks to replace. I have the final drive protector and breakaway spools front and rear. So far my FD protection has not been needed. I ride in the rocks so it's a must. I've had to bang my skid plate back into shape a few times already.

Seal savers are good but need to be cleaned regularly. Otherwise they will strip off the chrome if you do a lot of dirt riding. I clean mine at each oil change and spray them with WD40.

I'm finding more and more that Yamaha did it right when building this bike. A lot of OEM parts are cheap to replace. They are designed as a fuse so as to not destroy other stuff.

It's just like a lot of Jeeps that you see....TONS of add-ons....that DO add to the capabilities....that are NEVER used. My Jeep is boring....hardly any add-ons....and capable as heck.
LOL I almost spit out my coffee!! How so very true!! My uncle has a Rubicon that's rock crawler ready. It has every possible suspension and skid plate protection and I even think a snorkel. It never sees anything other than a dirt driveway.

OTOH, my best friend in Oklahoma has a bone stock jeep. He found out once you get it in water past the bottom of dashboard it dies!!

WD works fine for cleaning sliders, I found Maxima suspension clean spray works even better (attracts less dirt) and smells like candy:)
