Sorry Squibb, but I don't trust this decoder..
I also says the production code to be "23P8"
But Yamaha says "23P1"

Does all this debate really matter. All it tells us is that many, indeed most, free decoders are faulted.

It's just conceivable that it was a launch bike from 2010, rather than an early 2011. MCN were at the European launch in May 2010, so there may be some vids around. IIRC, the launch fleet were German registered. Back then, just getting a test ride was virtually impossible in the UK, unless your dealer could get hold of a press fleet bike. The market was pre-order only & bikes extremely scarce; largely the reason for a great bike not taking off in terms of sales. Quite why this one wasn't registered until March 2013 is a mystery - maybe the UK Importer was clearing any unsold stocks ahead of the 2014 revamp, maybe it was damaged in transit ......... who knows. Possibly an old number plate or paperwork will reveal the supplying dealer, but whether they can shed any light on the facts after all these years seems doubtful. However a Yam dealer should at least be an accurate source for a VIN decode.......if/when they ever re-open in these strange times.

yes got that thanks alot but it says my mdel year is 2013 BUT does that mean it was mfg in 2013

rob
Yes :)
(I have no evidense for this assertion:eek::), but why should it be anything else)

Not sure how it works in the rest of the world, but here MFR date and model year do not necessarily equate. My Gen 1 US spec bike was manufactured in 2011. I took delivery in July of 2011. It is a 2012 model year.

Hmmm. that is a surprise for me...
I'm aware that a xxxx model could have been produced late previous year.
But this must be at least 8 months before model year

Model year is just that, model year. Very important especially in an emissions change year. As an example you build a vehicle on December 31. But it does not leave the factory till Jan 3. It must meet the emissions laws in effect in January, not December.

I am just as baffled by the practice in The UK. Bike year goes by the year first registered. To us over here that is odd.

Yes of course...I know this ;)
But still, so many months...do you by any chance have your VIN number available without to much trouble?

Thank you :)
But it seams that Yamaha USA don't have the possibility to search by VIN number in parts catalog:eek::oops:.
And xxxDP03xxxxxxxx did not think it would exist:rolleyes:.
I have to say that I don't know anything about the VIN number for other than Europe, so I back out:)
Sorry for the inconvenience...

Has anyone looked at their VIN sticker on the Bike???

My VIN plate has 2 important values the Build date and the VIN #
My S10 is Built 11/14 and has VIN xxxxxxxxxFxxxxxxx
(any other codes shown will be model specific for colour or emission packages)

here are the VIN decoders for the 10th digit in the VIN = Year model
1980 - A1990 - L2000 - Y2010 - A2020 - L
1981 - B1991 - M2001 - 12011 - B2021 - M
1982 - C1992 - N2002 - 22012 - C2022 - N
1983 - D1993 - P2003 - 32013 - D2023 - P
1984 - E1994 - R2004 - 42014 - E2024 - R
1985 - F1995 - S2005 - 52015 - F2025 - S
1986 - G1996 - T2006 - 62016 - G2026 - T
1987 - H1997 - V2007 - 72017 - H2027 - V
1988 - J1998 - W2008 - 82018 - J2028 - W
1989 - K1999 - X2009 - 92019 - K2029 - X

My VIN plate info mean it has a build date of Nov 2014, and the VIN decoder says it is 2015 model specifications, Most automotive companies they use the VIN to make sure you get parts for your bike/car and not something that does not fit. Yeah there are parts that spread over number of year for a model.
Problem I find is that those online bike OEM part catalog don't use VIN, so you need to make sure you get parts for a 2015 not a 2014. eg in Oz 2014 S10 is white, and a 2015 is matte black.

Auto companies need to start building early so that the next years model reaches overseas markets etc, so a new year build cycle starts day 01 OCT the previous year, so technically if you get a build date stamp of 10/14 it still is a 2015 Bike (but check VIN) - and is 3 months old in 2015. But it has been built to 2015 model specifications as the VIN will show "F" so is a 2015 model bike.

In Australia we have really confusing processes for registration and insurance identification....
Australian Registration uses the Build date year as the YEAR of the bike on file. Sales jargon and dealerships also call this the Manufacturing Year = MY14.
So..... Year on file for registration is then picked up by insurances companies so they now cover a MY14 bike as a 2014 model even though the VIN says 2015 model !!!!
This poses 2 problems... my parts are not from 2014 model (if a repairs shop uses OEM part catalog), and insurance companies know that they can charge you more for insurance now as the bike is 1 year older than it really is. As Bikes/Cars age insurance premiums rise because insurance companies here use the excuse that it is now harder to fix as parts are more expensive for older models. Yeah right!!!

Unfortunately dealerships use MY to their advantage when selling eg saying it is a MY15. Forums and comment threads are always filled with the following confusion - I thought I was buying a 2015 model but dealership sold me a 2014 model advertised as MY15 but it was built in 10/2014 and I want a discount due to misrepresentation... blah blah blah

So I have told my Insurance companies when I insured my bikes/cars that the model year is what the VIN tells me not what registration tell me.

I don't understand the UK registration codes, but if a bike is stuck at a dealer for 2 years then is first registered in 2013, it could be a 2011 model bike that could have been built in 10/10.

The 10th digit don't work on the European models...
If you look at the VIN postet from bimota, the 10th digit is 0.
And here mine, also 0 in 10th digit, JYADP071000000846

And picture of VIN sticker and plate.....no date as far as I can see.

Just had a look at the VIN sticker on my bike. The format differs slightly and my bike states the sound output to be 89dBa, not 87 like yours. Regardless, there is nothing to give away the date of production. The data that I circled above is part of the type approval number. Again, it differs from my 2016 bike.
