I wonder if the lube you found on the wheel was spillage from the PO changing the fluid?
He told me he hadn't and for as little as he used it I believe him. 400 more miles since I found the leak, still dry......so strange.

Is the leaking what you all mean over here at the oil seal behind the rear wheel? Not sure which one you mean.

Thanks,
Stefan.

My guess is that your bike sat so long the seal slightly deformed and the first time(s) out the slight egg shape let a few drops get past. Heat up the seal and flex it with some more riding and it ought to lose the egg shape to seal back up.

The diff does get warm/hot, nothing to worry about.

The leak needs addressing, probably starting with a diff oil change, replacing the drain bolt and washer at the same time. Then seeing if it still leaks.

I would recommend using synthetic gear oil.

Clean it well and then see if it the axle seal or just needing a new crush washer on the drain plug. Lots and lots of posts about axle seals that stop leaking, trying a seal saver, and how to replace a seal.

After an 900 km weekend of mostly road riding with some gravel roads (including river crossings). I found oil around my diff. (see photos). The diff felt warm (40-50 degrees C)..
Should I be concerned? Should I do anything?
You should not be concerned until it stops leaking. Afterwhich you should add more gear oil

Thanks for the replies. I will change the fluid and replace the washer and see what happens.
There are various recommendations on the type/ brand of fluid, I'm getting confused. It's like going to two doctors and getting different diagnosis.

Buy the weight specified in synthetic, don't worry about the rest.

Its easy.. The seal is available and the "how-to" is on You-Tube ! Ive changed a hand full... There is no rhyme or reason to the ones that start leaking... Miles / year bikes are all over the board...
I found a YouTube video on how to change the oil seal but I'm a little leery about drilling into the old seal and inserting a sheet metal screw without damaging what's behind the seal. Since you've changed a few of the seals, approximately how deep do you drill into the old seal? Also, if I understood correctly, the seal has a metal band inside it and this is what I need to set the screw into? Is this correct? Thanks for your guidance.
