OK - this won't mean anything to most of you, but there are a few of us in North Texas that might find this beneficial. I tried to get spare keys cut at a couple different places, but no one carries blanks for motorcycles.

Jabo's Ace Hardware in Keller, TX didn't have them either, but at least offered to order the blanks. They ordered 10 blanks for the Tenere that should be in Friday. I bought 2 of them @ $3 each.

Ace really is the place with the helpful hardware man. ::008::

FYI - The iLco key blank reference #s are: X248 YM63

Surprised ACE didn't stock it.

Good to know. I've got a spare, but this is close by the house, so maybe I should grab another. There's no electro gizmos in this key?

No, US bikes do not have the chip'd keys.

Canadian and EU bikes all get the factory immobilizer and thus the infamous 'Red Key' and all of their keys have a chip in them.

Does anyone know if the 2014+ keys blanks are online somewhere or easy to get made?

Welcome to the forum!

For a US bike or the rest of the world? Please take a few moments to fill out your profile with at least a general location and some other info. It really helps people to answer questions more accurately, and also to get a better idea of how your posts contribute to a thread by providing some context. ::008::

US keys don't have chips, so you can order key blanks from ebay and have your local locksmith or hardware store cut them. Your local Yamaha dealer can order cut keys based on your key # or VIN usually too, as well as just un-cut blanks, (sometimes).

For chip keys, I don't know if a good locksmith shop can order blanks and cut/program them or if you are stuck going to the dealer. Perhaps someone else will chime in on that. Earlier in this thread I posted the aftermarket key blank codes, which you could call locally and ask if they have, if you are a US owner.

My locksmith in Maryland is around the corner from a BMW/Ducati/Harley/etc dealer and said he does bikes with immobilizers when he did the electronic key fobs for my new truck.

I had to get a new set a couple months ago. Ordered the Yamaha blank, through a dealer, but their cutter was down. Had to go to a locksmith to get it cut (Home Depot or other mass production cutter machines won't do them). Fortunately, the locksmith also had one of the European keys I needed. If I were doing it all over again, I'd go straight to the decent locksmith. You'd be amazed at what they can match.

My lessons learned:

1. Always put your keys in a standard place immediately after putting the bike away, and always keep a complete backup set. Best I can guess, my original set fell in the recycle bin while changing.

2. There is a key tag number that comes new with the bike, so you can order a precut key. I did not get this when I bought the used bike.

3. You can buy a complete Givi Monokey lock with two keys for the same price as one key blank and cutting fee.

Save yourself the hassle of trying to buy blanks from a Yamaha dealer. I just went to a locksmith, he took one look at the key and knew right away which blank to cut. He had a whole rack of blanks for Yamahas. I got 4 keys cut for $20. I then put one in the pocket of both of my riding jackets. These blanks do not bend like the cheap keys from Yamaha when you open your Yamaha side cases.

And that is an excellent tip for riders that have the Yamaha side or top cases. ::008:: If you don't have the Yamaha cases, the oem keys hold up fine, but they suck for luggage. Same on the FJR.

I have a spare key hid in behind the wiring by the battery, just in case. I also zip tied an allen wrench to the frame so as to be able to get to the hidden key.

Jabo's Ace Hardware is in Fort Worth

Westlake Ace Hardware is in Keller, TX

Which one was it. I can get to either one in 10 mins.

We should rally all our Ft Worth Teneres some day.

What does a dealer charge? To me, it would be easy to call them up, give them the code, and go pick it up. Unless of course I have to give them a kidney for the key.

I use Certified Safe and Lock Co http://www.sacalarm.com/csl-locksmith

They are excellent locksmiths. I had bought new blanks ($11 each I think) from the dealership. Took the Yamaha blanks to them and they wanted some outrageous amount to cut the Yamaha blanks with no guarantee. I was surprised and disappointed.

Asked what they recommended. They brought a key that looked like the Yamaha key asked what the cost was to cut the blank and they said $6. Asked what the key cost and they said that was the total cost for key and cut. Bought four keys and returned the Yamaha blanks.

One of the locksmiths cut a short blank hoping it would have less twist. It did everything but start the engine.

I keep a spare key under the seat and another taped to the frame.

Spare key under the seat? That's not much help if you need the key to get to it...

Are you still putting your bike key in your pocket at stops? ;)

For what it's worth, I got 5 blanks, from these folks for like $11 including fast shipping. Then went to a mom and pop hardware store and got them made. They worked great. https://www.clksupplies.com/products/x248-ym63-yamaha-motorcycle-key
