Last May I called a local Yamaha dealer, Alcoa Good Times, to make an appointment to get my headlight harness recall done. I was told that they would order the parts and call me when they came in. They never called. I followed up several times but was just told that the parts were ordered. I got busy and stopped following up until today when I dropped in to ask about getting the recall done.

I was told that there was no record of the parts ever being ordered and that unless I drop my bike off and leave it, I would have to pay for the parts before they would order them! I have never heard of such a thing. Has anyone else had to front the money to have their headlight harness recall done?

Nope, no reason at all needing to leave the bike for a simple recall. I haven't had mine done yet, but my dealer promised parts availability and a 1 hour turnaround.

Find another dealer or put a call into Yamaha corporate and wake them up...

Ordered my parts 6 weeks ago at the dealer after getting the bike inspected. Today I call to find out if the parts are in and they tell me that they don't have the parts and that Yamaha's records show that the recall repair was already done to my machine. ::010::

My son had the same situation when he had a recall on his 08 KLR. The multi line dealer in Gulfport MS (Kaw, Yam, Honda) told him they wouldn't order parts for the recall unless he left the bike with them. The said they wanted to make sure that if they ordered the parts he would bring the bike in. He called Kaw customer service and got it straightened out. No reason for a dealer to do that.

Yup!
It happened when the headlight recall was out, I had to leave my bike for over a week at Santa Fe motor sports.
I was told by another dealer in Albuquerque Bobby J's that that was BS.
Bobby J's would have ordered the part then called me when it came in to do the swap..

When I dropped in on my dealer earlier in the year to say I'd received the recall letter from Yamaha, they said, yep we know, we already have the parts. And they did - the package was there with my name on it. They said if I hadn't come in they'd have called me.

As cheap as the harness is, I just bought one and installed it myself. The dealer is 15 miles away and I had it put in faster than I could have rode there and back.

Being in the automotive business for 25 years I know that would be the kiss of death for a car dealership. We wouldn't dream of treating our customers like that. At a minimum they would have to provide a loaner bike for me to leave mine because they didn't stock any parts. I'd recommend another dealer if you have any others near.

I didn't have that issue. My dealer sold the bike to me, so they ordered kits for all the S10's they had sold, then called up the owners when the parts were in. I called them when I got the letter and they said the parts were on order and they had my name down on the list to call when they came in. They did call, I went down, took a GSXR for a test ride and when I got back the headlight harness recall was done and I rode off on my bike.

I suspect that in areas that have several dealers, some will be reluctant to order parts if they don't have any service history with you and you just call. Too easy for a competitor dealer to have the parts in stock and just do it, then they have a recall kit they don't need.

Moto dealers have been getting really tight with parts dollars. Major brand dealers don't even stock simple gaskets in some cases. I actually had a diagnosis issues on a BMW where they told me the stator was fine. I asked if they had done a visual inspection, (takes about 5 minutes to just pull the cover off, if the stator is bad, it's obvious, black and crispy), and they had not. I asked why - because they didn't have the $7 gasket!! I limped the bike 400 miles home and did the work myself.

I'm not saying it's good practice, just that I can see why it's happening. Asking the customer to pay for parts that are a recall issue is BS though. Reinforce that you WILL be bringing the bike in, ONCE THEY HAVE THE PARTS, so you can get the recall done might help.

@JohnB - If they say they show the recall has been done, they should also be able to see what dealer did it. If not, Call Yamaha Customer Service and talk to them, (have your VIN ready). 1-800-962-7926

I agree with barkinglizard. My dealer would never treat me like that. In fact, I had the headlight recall done by him before it was officially announced by Yamaha Canada. Yamaha Canada was surprised he knew about the recall before they told him it was in place. :)

BS. When I contacted the local dealer they ordered the harness, called me when it was in, switched it out. Absolutely no mention of money or expense to me. No sensible reason to have to leave the bike prior to getting the new harness.

Santa Fe Motorsports (http://www.santafemotorsports.com) didn't want my business. This is the same place that the Service manager refused to synchronize my throttle bodies, and these guys are Yamaha certified mechanics and dealer.
I use my local Mechanic for non warranty work and go to Bobby J's 55 miles one way to Albuquerque for the Yamaha Warm and Fuzzy stuff.

My dealer, Bobby J's in Albuquerque, is so used to me being ahead of the curve (because of this forum) with the ST that they ordered the harness and handed it to me because they knew I wanted to install it myself. The service manager asked me to rate them well when I got a survey about how they performed the install.

When I had mine done, I called the dealer. They asked for my VIN so they could verify the recall applied and order the parts against it so Yamaha would credit them. When the parts arrived they called and we scheduled a convenient time for both of us.

Of course they messed up the install, lost a handful of hardware. They made good after I sent the service manager an email with pictures and a list of replacement parts.

Good reason they have been around for so long..
Hate the long ride to get stuff done but BJ's is the only real service department on the block for my bike.
