bought this bike a few days past Christmas and here it is in late august with a touch over 1200 miles and a big failure . between work weather pandemic , I just haven't had a lot of time to ride . about a month ago started bike and I could barely read the right half of the "meter " (that's what the dealer calls it ) I call it the dash board ; speedometer tach etc.... by the next ride it seemed to be back to normal but the right side was a lot darker . you can see the display but it is noticeably darker . have a Colorado trip planned with a buddy and was concerned that something was wrong here . so what happens if the dash completely fails and you can not see anything ? if you cannot read your speed or know your settings can that be a good situation . will the bike even work at all , could it leave you stranded ? so I cancelled the trip (decided to do a car trip with wife ) and scheduled a visit to the dealership. and c19 rules means a had to make an appointment to drop off bike a week before they even will look at it . and Wednesday got a call saying the meter is trashed and needs to be replaced (so I'm not imagining what I'm seeing ) and this morning the dealer says that part is back logged and not available till after September 14 th. so they will not be able to even order till the 14 th at earliest . then a little icing on the cake , dealer says battery is failing and I will have to replace it . brand new bike with brand new battery (their price is 340.00 to install , nope , I will do that myself ) So has anyone else had this issue ? thinking maybe I should have bought the overpriced Bavarian coffee shop wonder bike ...... you kinda expect this from them , not Yamaha . so the big question is this going to be a long term issue to be worried about or a one off issue that the replacement part will fix forever ? the part is 700.00 just saying.

It's unusual on a Super10, but I have heard of FJRs with a faded dash meter, usually where the meter has overheated due to the bike having been parked in direct sunlight.

Apparently, once they cool off, they often return to normality, but not always. Any chance this is your issue?

Why isn't the battery covered under warranty? When you buy a car, the battery has a 12 month warranty; never have had a battery fail before 12mo though.

as for the battery , I need to have a face to face with this service writer .... and motorcycle dashes live out in the elements hot or cold .... not saying much for an adventure bike if the meter can't stand a little heat or cold ..... they ran a diagnostic and determined the meter is bad , hopefully a one off event for all the Tenere's out there. its hot in Texas but I do not remember it being all that hot that day it first acted up... been hotter since then and it hadn't repeated that first event.... you can't ride any where in Texas in the summer and not park in the heat ,lol.... hell , its a Tenere named for a place in the desert for crying out loud...... as long as they fix it.

Well, I'm kind of confused..
Is you meter just a bit darker in right side, or not readable at all ?

My meter was the same in left and right side when new. But after a break in the sunlight for ½ hour only about a mounth old, when starting again the meter in right side was darker then left.
It was working perfect, and easily readable, just a bit darker.
And 3 years later, still the same, not better or worse, and have been working all the time.
So, if yours works, and just is darker, I think it will continue working.

It seems when mine was new in the heat the display would get darker as well. I either got used to it or it didn’t bother me as much. If it did I would have taken it in to the dealer. Sounds like yours is bad.

Where your bike is still under warranty, I would look into the extended warranty Yamaha offers. You can get it pretty cheaply. $400 or less Worth looking at. There’s a thread here on it, or pm me for details.
As for the battery it should be covered. I’d have a word with the dealership.

Thanks guys, they determined that it was bad . So we will go with that. I could read the right side but it was pretty dark . It’s initial issue was a white out right side was barely readable as it was so washed out, then it seemed normal but dark

My XSR900 battery died at 9 months. When I called the local Honda/Yamaha dealer they said I would have to eat the battery.

When I brought it in they said "Oh, I thought you had a Honda and they are a real pain on batteries" then they proceeded to replace it in warranty.

I would place a call to Yamaha, it should be covered.

+1

When I was looking into buying an FJR a few years back, I ran across this video by TwoWheelObsession of the same screen failure. He mentions in the video that the Super T uses the same/similar screen. He believes the screen itself is somehow susceptible to UV radiation damage. Solution for him was to replace it, and he made a cover so it doesn't bake in the sun.

interesting video , suggesting this dash thing is possibly an on going worry for the future . if it fails a second time I will just get rid of the bike , can't be having that . sounds like a need for a recall and a part redesign ......

Yeah. Yamaha seems content to utilize the same screen year-after-year, ignoring the problem and just replacing them as necessary, though it oddly doesn't seem to affect all bikes.

It's difficult to come up with a preventative solution without knowing whether it's truly a heat or UV-related issue, but they do make UV-blocking screen protectors for the Tenere -- they're only like $10 -- else, you can order a roll of UV/IR solar film for windows and cut it yourself. I may 3D print a drop-down dash cover for when parked in the sun for hours. Or just toss a rag over it. Not sure yet, but I'd like to prevent this from happening as well.

Texas heat is weird. Arizona has just as much sun/heat, but it doesn't seem to jack stuff up as much. Maybe it the combo of sun/heat plus humidity. But, I've never had as many tires get hard before they wear out, anywhere else that I've lived. Cars and bikes.

I had what you describe happen to me once a couple years ago on a road trip, parked outside for a few hours in blazing Atlanta heat. Started it up and the right side display was dark and almost unreadable, as if all of the pixels (whatever they're called on this display type) were on. Went back to normal after riding for a bit. Hasn't happened since

Generation1 bikes (particularly in the uk) had problems with the meter/dash/console.
It was the left button that would fail. After which, one could not reset the trip meter or run diagnostics. My first console failed whilst in warranty. The second one failed about a month out of warranty and Yamaha refused to rellace it and told me it would cost £700 to replace so I've lived with it for the last 7 years and 100,000 miles+
It still p***es me off though that Yamaha would not do a recall on it.
I gathered as much info as I could and had (I think...if memory serves me right) about 10 owners that had the same experience. Considering how few S10's are in the UK, I would say that's quite a big number of broken consoles.
I love everything else about the bike though so I eventually decided to drop my quest with trying to get Yamaha to replace it and opted for the quiet life.
Hopefully you won't have it happen twice like I did. (Different console on the Gen1 of course), maybe that's why they changed it.
If you do a search on here you'll probably find my original posts about the whole debacle

Any chance of the windshield lensing the sun onto the LCD?

That's my belief in what caused the problem in mine, Don, and it's probably why it doesn't happen consistently. The sun has to be at the right angle and the bike has to be at the right angle so the sun can focus just right on the instrument pod. I did some reading on line after it happened to me, and that darkening effect is a symptom of an overheated LCD screen. Fortunately mine went back to basically normal and it's never happened again (in spite of a lot of riding in Utah in the summer), though I'd swear the right side part of the pod is slightly darker now than it was before.

To the OP, I would also be very pissed 1 - it failed 2 - back ordered part.........That sucks you buy these toys for fun & when they let you down it hurts sorry to hear about dash failure. Now about those coffee shop bikes, I've had 3 BMW's, 1 Ducati Multistrada & a KTM, believe me the ST is far more reliable than any of those, when I bought my 2014 ES reliability was the reason. Get the YES warranty if you keep the bike. The only problem I've had with the ST in 6 years is a bad front brake switch. I'm due for new ride and been looking at the 2020 KTM's reading the ADV KTM forum It's mind blowing how many major problems there new ADV bikes have. Oh yeah trying sourcing a new dash yourself you may get lucky.
Good Luck
