I keep reading that an inner tube should be incorporated inside the drive at the rear wheel. Apparently this is to protect the rubber drive?
Sorry I am not a mechanic, so diiscription is vague. In my little mind this would result in a number of inner tube bits compromising the drive. Can someone provide clarity?

not aware of inner tubes in a cush drive.. the rubber blocks that fit in rear hub is the cush drive... pretty simple

I've never heard that in the four years I've owned my S10. I can't conceive of a reason why you'd put an inner tube into the cush drive, how it would fit, or what good it would do. Where are you reading this?

This was a common mod on the XT660's to tighten up a loose rubber and it works a treat.

I think sometimes people will put a few slices of innertube in there if the cush drives are worn. Alternative is to replace cush drives with new ones. Mine have done 110,000 miles and are still ok so I dont think you need to worry. Ride and enjoy!

This is an OLD trick to be really cheap when the rubber blocks wear and you want to sell a bike.
No need for it on the Teneres.

I can just picture that astonished look on my face as I'm removing the rear wheel for a tire change, to see something like that! WTF!!

Wow, been riding for a Long Time, never heard of this cheat. LOL, my ol' XL600 prolly could have used this trick. That Thumper was tough on stuff.

Thanks to all who responded. As indicated by others, this use of inner tube, was used on worn blocks in T660 moto’s and not S10’s or at lease not to our knowledge. Dirty trick if selling a well used machine!

Yeah like jamming beef fat into the rear differential of a car or truck to stop it from sounding and acting like it's ready to go.
My uncle told me that one, he was burned by a seller buying a work truck in the 70's.

I grew up on Atwood Lake when it was considered to be Appalachian and not a resort. I had a grandfather who would flip cars and while we never used most of them, my Dad related a lot of those tricks and how normal they were when times were hard. Things like bananas in a singing manual transmission, stopping squealing belts, using soup cans wire and epoxy to silence exhaust system holes, welding totaled cars together, moving data plates...



There were a few he did teach me to do for cars I'd pick up while I was in high school, such as how to grind crank throw bearings without removing the engine after a previous owner ran it without oil, creative welding and brazing, creative bondo and painting...
