Cruise Control Issue – I have been a Forum member for about 1½ years and I really appreciate all the good information about the Super Tenere found here on the Forum. Last year I ran into the cruise control issue that many other Forum members have posted about. The information on the Forum about possible solutions was very helpful, and in fact I was able to correct the issue based on info from Forum members.

I’m posting this thread because I just replaced my front brake switch for the second time (this seemed odd to me) so I thought I would post my experience with the cruise control issue.

I purchased a new 2018 Super Tenere ES in October 2018 with zero miles on the odometer. In August 2019, at about 13,400 miles, I started getting an intermittent problem with the inability to activate the cruise control (sometimes it would show a solid yellow light and other times it would flash yellow rapidly). Frequently, when I pushed the cruise power switch on the left handlebar, the yellow cruise control system light would flash rapidly rather than the normal solid yellow. Other times I would pull in the front brake lever and the yellow cruise light would start flashing and the cruise control would become inoperable. If I turned off the motor and then restarted it, the cruise control would function normally. Within a few weeks, the cruise control completely stopped working. In addition, when turning off the ignition switch, the right side of the display would read a fault code 090.

Based on information I read here on the Forum, on September 4, 2019, I replaced the front brake switch. This immediately cured the problem. The Yamaha part number was 2BS-83980-00-00. As others on the Forum have commented, there are two micro switches inside the part. One switch is of course the brake light switch and the other switch deactivates the cruise control.

Flash forward to September 2020, at 20,201 miles, the cruise control started acting up again. Same symptoms, as well as the 090 fault code. I ordered a new front brake switch and installed it on October 8, 2020. Again, this immediately cured the problem. Yamaha slightly changed the part number of the brake switch; the new part number is 2BS-83980-01-00. I hope this means that Yamaha has redesigned the micro switches to make them more robust. I guess time will tell.

It wouldn't surprise me all that much that the switches were going bad. . . . if you lived in Seattle, or the UK. But . . . . Arizona? When you took the other switch off, did you take it apart to see if there was an obvious reason? I'd dielectric grease the crap out of any/all connections when I replaced it. Good luck.

I mentioned in the other recent thread that I replaced the front brake switch assembly on my FJR to cure an intermittent CC issue. Same symptoms - CC worked sometimes, brake light stuck on sometimes. As far as the "failure", the micro switches themselves are good quality and are appropriate for the application. I disassembled the switch and traced them back to the supplier. Manufacturer is Omron, one is NO, the other is NC.

The problem I see is the plastic plunger and case that the switches are enclosed in. Add wet and/or dust to the plastic plunger and it sticks just enough to cause a fault. Rapidly cycling the front lever will cure the sticking until it happens again. Cleaning the plastic plunger helps and will sometimes cure the problem. Keeping the area around the switch / plunger cleaned is likely the best answer for longevity.

Hello Sierra1, I did take the switch housing apart and the problem was very evident. The cruise control deactivation micro switch had a deformed plastic pin protruding from it. The pin looked like it was made of plastic (or nylon) and I think it deformed because the material was not strong enough to withstand the repetitive compression motion of the front brake lever. The actual brake light micro switch plastic pin looked fine (it was not deformed). Both micro switches looked identical so I'm not sure why one pin would deform and the other one didn't.

You're right is doesn't rain much in Phoenix, but during the first 2 weeks of June 2019, I rode my S10 from Phoenix to Fairbanks, Alaska (8,000 miles round trip). It rained every day, even on my rest day in Fairbanks it rained. It didn't rain solid every day because I kept riding in and out of storm systems. So I got a lot of practice riding in heavy rain.

Thanks for the info here...
I just purchased a 2015 ES w/8.7K, from a dealership. The only thing I didn't check on my test ride was Cruise, being in city limits. Today I discovered cruise is not working... I will call tomorrow and see if dealership did the recall, front brake switch replacement.
The only thing I've modified since purchase, was to place a brake light modulator. Pretty sure this is not the malfunction problem. I've installed similar devices on 2 previous Gold Wings with factory cruise and no issues.
If anyone has other suggestions, please post.

If it was me, I'd disconnect the modulator just to be certain that it is not the issue. Don't get me wrong, I agree that it is an unlikely culprit. Since the switch is well documented for causing cruise issues. But, measure twice, cut once.

I think Tenere front brake switch recall is 2018 and newer.
I figured mine out after reviewing the owners manual... Didn't realize there is an on/off switch for the cruise control. Not sure if all are alike, but most times after turning key off, I have to turn the cruise switch back to ON. Glad mine was only a flip of the switch to be operational.

Nope. I think it goes back to '14, with the exception of '15. Mine's a '17, and on the list. So, your cruise is working again?

Ok, I thought I saw somebody post that they checked, and for some odd reason the '15 wasn't on the list. Didn't make sense at the time either. I assumed that all Gen 2s were listed.

@TOS The cruise control on my '18 began to malfunction and it turned out to be a sticky switch at the clutch lever. I gave it a squirt of quality lubricant and it never complained again.

I believe Yamaha screwed up the recall letters listing of years but I believe eventually all generation 2 Tenere’s became eligible for the brake switch recall . So far the cruise control has been working perfectly on my 2018 so I haven’t bothered to take it in for the recall yet. I have received 2 different brake recall letters from Yamaha.

My CC problem was intermittent (2016). Per Mr. Murphy, it would usually act up when I really wanted to use it. I'd say it was 50/50 as to whether it would work or not. Maybe it was my imagination, but it seemed more likely to flake out in hot weather. This spring it was working fine, but I had the recall notice and got the front brake switch done. Hasn't failed yet (....he says, hoping not to curse his luck).
