Cruise control (intermittent failures)

My cruise control only works sometimes, but not all of the time.
I rode the bike today. I turned the key on , waited for it to go through the brief cycle and a code of "090" is displayed.
I turn the key off, pause, turn on the key, and it goes through the brief cycle and all looks normal. In both cases, I attempted to arm the cruise control prior to starting the bike. The amber cruise control arm light is flashing, meaning that you cannot set the cruise control.
I cycled the key again and no luck.
I started the bike and rode it for about an hour with no cruise control.
After a stop, I restarted the bike and the cruise control finally worked and it worked for the remainder of the day.
WTF...?? I would be pleased to hear from others who have experienced this problem. I have spoken with the dealership where I bought the bike (2018 ES), and they have never heard of this issue.
I'll try and post a picture of the display.
Any comments or suggestions or assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
SHUMBA

Mine did the same thing and I researched and determined the front brake switch was sticking. The brake light was staying on. Bought a new switch ($80 took 5 weeks to get it) and when I started to install I decided to clean the old one as a try. It has worked fine ever since and the new one is still in the bag. Disassembling and reassembling is a little tricky. Listen for 2 clicks when operating the brake lever. I was only hearing one.

As many time that this has been brought up. . . . .? And, they've never heard of it? Would not instill confidence. NCsurveyor bruced me. Many members have fixed their C.C. issues with a good switch cleaning.

Okay thanks,
I'm going to be spraying some brake cleaner on these switches, but first I will have to find them.

I had this issue also on a 2018, dealer said they hadn't heard of this but I mentioned this forum, they contacted Yamaha technical and replaced it FOC, shame when they took the old one off they cut the wires and it felt down into the sump plate, still when I took the sump plate off it did make me realise I had an oil leak from the water pump, another story for this one I think, push your dealer to replace these are around the world bikes two years is not long enough before a failure of a brake switch. Photo below is what I found when I removed my bash plate you can see the cut off switch and also the oil leak.20201024_061150.jpg

First time on my '17, I hit some RR tracks and the cruise button started blinking. Wouldn't set. Next day, fine. Another day it was blinking from the get-go and I stopped about 5 miles from the house and cycled the ignition. Working fine since (battery is original, so it may need replacing). Coming home from a ride yesterday, my co-rider behind me says he didn't see my brake light work while stopping, but it did seem bright all the time. Cruise worked fine, though. Perhaps I better check the front brake switch(s) as NCsurveryor did. Thanks for the round-about tip.

I've only just got the bike and I've never had cruise control on a bike before so I've tried it out a few times over the last week. I could get the first switch to light up the on the dash but it was always hit and miss if pressing the 2nd switch would make the cruise control activate or do nothing at all.

I sussed it in the end. One of the first things I do with any new bike is to alter all the controls to where I want them. I had used the adjuster to lower the rear brake pedal so I could keep my foot above it if I wanted without discomfort. The brake light switch for the rear brake was now activated earlier than usual and it was sometimes sticking slightly without me knowing whilst riding along. I removed the small protecting plate and adjusted the brake light switch to suit the lever position and now cruise control activates every time.

Code 090 is switch failure. In my case it was front brake light switch but others have found a failed clutch switch or rear brake switch. Lots of information on diagnosis in earlier threads, search is your friend. In my case I found high resistance in one circuit to identify the faulty unit and made the repair.

How old is your 2018?
Mine was 2 months out of warranty and they wouldn't replace it they did offer me one at 50% reduction 'as a gesture of goodwill' to which my response was that my gesture of goodwill is that I will never buy another new Yam again.

The Yamaha prices for those switches is crazy, for a Honda Goldwing like mine those switches are $12 , the clutch switch on mine has needed replacing a bunch of times but the others are still working fine at 558,000 miles. I’m not sure exactly why the clutch switch fails, sometimes blowing it out with contact cleaner helps but it eventually fails. Replacing the Honda switch is a very easy 10 minute job, the only tool required is a Phillips screwdriver.

I just replaced my front brake switch as it was sticking and the cruise control would not work unless I worked the front brake switch and restarted the bike. I tried cleaning and lubing it with no luck. The cruise control works great now.

I had a phone call yesterday from my local Dealer to say that Yamaha UK have issued a recall on S10 front brake light switches:)
I think it only applies to Gen 2's and I'm not sure if it relates specifically to brake lights sticking on or the well known cruise control issue but either way I'm happy.
I don't know if it will be a worldwide recall, but if anyone is experiencing difficulties with out of warranty claims, and before parting with the extortionate price for a new one, it may be a good idea to let your dealer know what's happening in the UK and they may be able to follow it up in your country.

Hi, was a month past, kicked off when they said I would have to pay, referred them to this forum and yamaha changed it without an issue, the pile leak was the water pump, they changed the seals fix outside warranty and when that didnt work they changed the whole waterpump, worth standing your ground do a bit of research and if need be contact yamaha direct, these bikes were built to go around the world and have done ask Nick Sanders......

I had a number of conversations with Yamaha UK to no avail, initially I was 2 months out of warranty then I discovered that they extended all warranties by 3 months from the 1st of March because of covid and dealerships being closed. Guess when my warranty expired - yep 28/02/20 because it was 1st registered 01/03 and they would not budge.
Alls well that ends well though, my local dealer called me Friday and told me they've issued a recall on the brake light switch.

I heard the same, and apparently it affects both.
