Cranks, no start, Code 19?

Looking for some help. Been having an inconsistent problem. I shut the bike off at a gas station, go to start it and it cranks but won't fire. Turn the key off, reset everything and try again, then it throws a code 19 (side stand). Cycle through the on/off routine a couple times and it fires up. I've messed with the side stand a few times, but it doesn't help. The bike is in neutral and the stand is up when it happens. Weird problem. Even if it was a side stand switch issue, the bike should still start because the bike is in neutral. Oh and if it matters, the bike is a 2013 with 24K miles. Anyone have any thoughts?

Is your 2013 on the wiring recall list ?
my 2013 did the no start thing twice in 50,000 miles, luckily both times it happened at home in my garage, the wiring recall came out after I traded for a new 2018 or I would have had it done.
only 13,000 miles on the new 2018 but it has always cranked and started better than the 2013 so I figure Yamaha must have figured something out.

Yes, it has a recall for some throttle wire that could make the bike not come back to idle after twisting the throttle. I haven't had the traditional "no start" issue that keeps popping up for many people though. And it throws the code too. I planned on having the recall done when they check the valve adjustment. Luckily, I'm at the end of the season. Doing an internet search brought up some R1 riders that had a similar issue too. Being that Yamaha interchanges parts between models, I'm looking at the fix the R1 guys are doing. Could be a ignition switch or rubbed through wiring. Just wondering if any other S10 owners have had the problem.

There used to be a very long thread about the wiring recall but i can’t find it right now, maybe someone else can find it ? many folks refuse to take the bike in for any recall. If I still owned my 2013 I definitely would have taken it in.

Had similar issue when my bike was new (code 012 crankshaft position sensor)....check the tightness of the starter relay connection above the battery (& all high current connections including the battery & grounds)...mine was loose, no issue since being tightened. The S10 is very sensitive to correct voltage....the ecu self-diagnostic can manifest in sometimes unrelated error codes. Dialectric grease is you friend...get it on as many of your exposed connections as you can.

did anyone ever come up with a definitive answer to this code 19 problem? I just had the above recall done hoping that might make it go away, no such luck, and the dealer couldn't figure it out, no surprise there.

So a little googling I came across this thread in an R6 forum https://www.r6-forum.com/threads/fixed-code-19-crank-no-start.241721/ the two bikes don't use a common key switch assembly, but numbers are very similar so does that mean the problem could be similar?

I just tried what they suggested cleaning with electrical cleaner, hopefully, the fix is that simple, if not what direction has any taken to resolve this and it has worked 100%?

Side stand switch? Mine is removed
Clutch switch? Cleaned
Key switch? Cleaned
Switch housings? Cleaned
Tilt switch/ cut off relay/ lean angle sensor? Location?
Circuit board/ diode partial failure? Location?
Starter relay? Cleaned and tightened

For reference, my bike is 2012, approx 100,000 miles, and it has gotten worse in the last 1000 miles, dramatically, to the point of having to turn off and on 10-15 times until it will not illuminate the check engine light and allow the bike to run...once running there has never been an issue

interesting... my 2014 with 199,000 miles, just yesterday wont start today. First ever issue with the bike. I'm having trouble finding the code that may cause this too.

If you get that code 19 when trying to start it, Lube the ignition switch. Might want to blast it out with contact cleaner first then lube it.

When the 19 is showing mine wouldn't crank. When the code is on your dash reach down to the wiring harness coming out of the ignition switch and give it a wiggle, the code may go out and it will start. I've got a new ignition switch on the bench waiting for the next time this exact thing crops up. It's happened to other riders as well. A new sidestand switch did nothing for my random code/no crank.

I had gone thru all the wiring connections after the recall was done to clean and put new dielectric grease on them all and also go thru all the additional wiring on the bike via the eastern beaver.

Bike on its center stand, turning on for checks and starting for checks as i went along, zero issues. I finish, move the bike put it on its side stand and I get code 19, stand the bike upright, turn the key on no code 19, back on the side stand code 19 again...which made me question the lean angle sensor.

When looking for that on the computer for location and tests I found the above thread about the key switch, I think I have narrowed it down to one or the other or both combined will be interested to know if @Don in Lodi a new switch cures it for you as you have the same model year

......or the sidestand switch
love your logic but sadly not that simple, mine has been cleaned, removed by bridging the connection, replaced...but still shows code 19!!!

I sat down with a Yamaha master tech for a half hour today to pick his brain, and it seems code 19 is a catch all that other codes don't cover, he was telling me he's seen over a dozen different things cause this code over the years, and there is no solid single answer to a fix.

Anyone tried cleaning out the battery connections terminals as well as the 2 connections to the Starter Relay? Intermittent issues are hard to root caused but are mostly due to poor connections. Within the female and male connectors, sometimes one of the pins can fall out (shifted) a little in the plastic housing and cause a poor connection.

I know this is an old thread, but I found the fix for my Fault code 19 issue. I cleaned the ignition switch with electrical cleaner and once dry, lubed it with PTFE spray. This has solved the code 19 problem. If it happens again, I'll probably replace the ignition switch, but so far so good. The original issue was very consistent and now I cant replicate the problem. I've put a bunch of miles on it too.
