The four minimalist tools that go with me on bike trips to Europe are the Toolcheck Plus, a Leatherman Crunch (awesome), regular Leatherman (Wave or Supertool) and a small Nealy tire repair kit. I needed only the first two to swap the back footpeg to the front on a buddy's Multistrada on the side of Stelvio after he planted it and busted off his right front peg. That set can fix or straighten anything that's worth fixing on a rental bike. The BMW tire repair kits in Europe use these odd rubber donuts that don't work, but it's easy to find an air pump so no need to carry the extra weight. In the US, I add a small air pump and a small jumper battery. The first mainly so I can check and top up my tires every day. The latter kept a buddy's old R90 with a dead stator going for a critical 50 miles when we were in the middle of nowhere Idaho last summer.
Funny. I used to carry an Airhead stator with me when I toured on my R80/7. I also carried carb diaphrams 'cause you never knew when those would fail.

Proper preparation prevents poor performance.

I'm with Eric, when I had my Tenere, I used a bunch of "leftover" tools I had to put together my kit. I would also use my kit to work on the bike, even when at home, and when I found something critical missing, I would add it to the kit. That way, I knew I had what I needed in order to work on the bike regardless of where I was.

Was going to create a new thread, but found this one.
I know the provided kit is crap and not worth the weight it adds, but i was surprised the included axle socket doesn’t even fit. Found a nice workaround online using a spark plug socket.

The "axle socket" is a spark plug socket. It's not strong enough to undo the axle, thought it might have done ok on the rear if you had the correct size wrench on the other side for the nut, (except for that pesky issue of not fitting, even after you de-burr it). A simple axle step tool is small and a good addition to the tool kit.

Oh haha, my mistake. I guess a bike without tubes wouldn’t come with tools to remove the wheels. The irony that I mistook a spark plug tool for a socket and instead used another spark plug socket. I’ll be adding the proper tool to my kit. Thx
