Great vid! Just curious, were the colors visible in the San Juan's (Million Dollar), or too much snow cover?
Thanks, Jon. Most every mountain on MDH was covered in snow. I'll be honest, I saw so many mountains, and so many different colors, I'm just blown away by the whole experience. Not sure what the San Juan Mountains would look like, but it was all so amazingly beautiful.

Dirt Dad - Glad you had an awesome trip and so sorry it ended in an unplanned manner. It has definitely been a wet one. The good news is that you got to see all those gorgeous mountains with snow.

Working my way through the videos I shot. Going to take several parts to get through all of it. Finished part 1 yesterday.
Thanks DD that brings back memories. I did Independence pass in late July 2012. Snow (mostly) gone but raining. Wore all the long sleeve stuff I had under my summer rain gear and still froze. But still a nice ride!

Nice! I've been on many of those roads on the bike but not all. The GoPro does make the drop offs look more severe than they actually are, which is pretty severe. You want to see sever dropoffs - here's Tahoe Flume trail as filmed by my son, 15 at the time - nearly gave his grandmother a coronary! But I wouldn't take him on it if it wasn't safe. https://youtu.be/nHMasvCLJTo

Next time shout out and I will leave town so you can have nice weather!

Well Jon, as always you've compiled another great collection of photos and a video. I always look forward to your ride reports. You and a few others on the forum have an ability to connect all the dots when pulling it together. I'm looking forward to seeng Part 2 and others.

On the FODS thread you said you think the insurance company will total it. Since you didn't go down what other than the Fan and Radiator and side panel was bad?

Thanks, Alan. I do really appreciate you letting me know. I create all of this so I have a record that I can go back and remember my thoughts on the trips. I am glad other enjoy it as well.

I've started part 2, but in less than 48 hours I'll be leaving to ride with spklbuk for a few days, so it will be a little while before I get it done. I promise it's coming.

Don't have final word yet, but the insurance inspector I spoke with yesterday thought the damage was even worse than the shop found on initial inspection. And I know the shop estimate was quite high. The radiator was torn from the bottom mount, which is apparently back to the frame. Insurance guy said he saw a break on the weld on the frame. Confirming what Romney told me, any damage to a frame is a total. Again, not the final word. I expect that tomorrow.

In the opinion of the insurance guy, part of my good fortune was the result of the well designed Tenere. I'm not sure what expertise he has to make that statement, but I do tend to agree. Why...? because the bike shook off three major hits.

The first hit was to the front of the bike. Enough to smash the right headlight, and break the left and right mounts of the plastic panels up front.

I believe the second hit was as the shoulder impacted ahead of the Givi crash bars as it rotated into the bars. This ripped the radiator down low, then crushed the Givi bars into the radiator/fan area up higher. My opinion is the Givi bars maintained enough integrity to protect my leg as the rear end of the deer rotated around my left leg.

Finally I believe the third impact was the rear end of the deer slamming into the left Caribou case. Crushing the super strong Hepco Becker rack and knocking off the case.

Thinking about the force that was required to crush both the crash bars and luggage rack on the left side, I'm so thankful I was on such a well designed, substantial bike. I don't think I can claim any grand riding skills were involved. I had no time to do anything, my only contribution to the outcome was not overreacting to the handlebars taking some really hard shots. The bike did the rest.

The only thing I can't understand is how the shifting link was bent. That's a mystery. Of course I'm not an accident investigator and I'm only speculating how it happened after looking over the bike this past weekend.

Who's doing the soundtrack on that? Volbeat has a version of that song, but that doesn't sound like them.

Except for Rocky Mountain Way (Joe Walsh) in Part 1, all songs have been songs have been Joe Bonamassa. Title of each song is at the very end of the video.

DD,

Thx for the pics, video and soundtrack. Sorry for your loss but what a way to end an adventure. Getting a new bike will help ease that sorrow. As for the shift-linkage rod, perhaps the animal's hoof or your boot was pushed into it. I've always thought the rod is somewhat exposed and prone to damage if dropped on the left-side.

That bike had been such a great bike for me. I wasn't ready to give it up just yet. It was in the process of finishing up the best ride I'd ever had. Even after all that, its final act was to keep me upright in a very adverse situation. Always going to be fond of that bike.

After finishing up the paperwork with the insurance company last Thursday the pain of getting the replacement is eased dramatically. Getting a new bike sooner rather than latter is in the cards.

Here's a plug for the insurance company. This is the second bike that has been deemed a total loss by Progressive in the last 5 years. I have to say they are so easy to deal with, and both times the settlement has left me with absolutely no room to complain. I'll be curious what I hear when I put the future new bike on the policy, but so far, they have been an A+ organization to deal with.

Maybe...I don't have a better explanation. I found no damage of any type on my boot or pants so I don't think it was from me. Could have been from a hoof. It certainly happened so fast there's no way for me to say for sure.
