I have a second gen bike and was wondering if anybody has removed or gutted their catalytic converter. If you did, what was the result?

I've looked into this, and it's a PITA unless you are a good welder/know a good welder that owes you a favor.

I have/know neither,
so I solved it by installing the arrow headers and slip on. Job done.

Can you feel the difference?or even better have you tried it on a rolling road to see the power gains?

Yep. The bike pulls like a freight train without the cat. It spins up much faster than it did with just the slip on.

Never had it on a dyno.

Good advice Greg.

Here’s another question: If one flashed the ecu and than decided to remove the cat or install headers is the different flash needed?

Probably much easier to put the Arrow headers on and a much better result.

I just gutted my exhaust headers . I will create a thread on how to do it etc.
It was easy and I would say it's a must do mod on ST .
Why spend $300 on Arrows when stock ones are stainless (the part where cat sits is not ) and weight the same as Arrows when you remove the cat . Actually I think stockers work even better because the cavity where cat was now acts like a little expansion chamber for the gas making the gas flow even better .
I just did a short 2 hour ride to test it and all I can say is wow , what a difference !!!
Engine now it's smoother , way smoother , runs cooler . Feels like it spins so much free'er and faster now through out all the rpm range .
I still have a choked off stock can , but I can only imagine how nice it will be when I will get some good aftermarket .
I'm not sure about power gains and torque gains , can't be that much imo , but removing that cat just makes your engine sing , completely different feel to it .

lucasteam, I’m looking forward to your write up. Maybe you can add a link here for those that might land on this first during their search.

it would not be better to replace the catalyst part with a stainless steel tube, and leave the cat intact? ... I think it would be better to keep the cat, if it were necessary to mount it in the future, to destroy it completely
