Re: Car tire?

Rider Magazine did a good article on this "Dark Side topic".

http://www.ridermagazine.com/browse-by-type/tires/tales-from-the-dark-side-putting-car-tires-on-motorcycles.htm/

Truth is I don't understand why it is such a heated topic. People have been doing this since bikes have been around. Custom choppers and bobbers are known for this. As CW said(and not saying that your old) his dad did this a long time ago. Tire manufacturers aren't going to give you the green light to put a tire on your bike that is designed for a car for liability reasons, but they aren't going to say that you can't either.

I have been running car tyres for over 100,000 Km's on my high performance Triumph Rocket 111's

With over 280 RWHP, there is no bike tyre that can handle the power and torque these monsters can throw out.

A lot more grip in the wet, 25-30,000 Km's tyre life, and did I mention the grip.

Still alive, and can hold my own in the twists.

Re: Car tire?

I worked at a boss hoss dealership in the 90's.Guys wanted to beat there buddys on similar bikes so we started adding stroker kits nitrous or whatever they wanted.Boss hoss came with large motorcycle tire ,but to get out of the hole we switched to car tire on rear.I do not recall the exact size but it fit on corvettes of the same era.I test rode many of these bikes. What I did not like is when leaned over far enough it would "flopover" on side wall. This I really did not like.Guys that owened them just got use to it.Jim

I'd put a C/T on an S10 in a heartbeat but where would you find a 160/65R17? Even a 165 - no one makes one that I can find.
Don't think you will find anything like that either. I ran a 205/55/17 on my DL650 and it worked astonishingly well. Some use a 205/50/17 also. Every once in awhile you can find something like a 175-185 width but they usually have real low profile aspect ratios andd I think that wouldn't work very well. As I said, I think a 205 would be too wide and would interfer with the caliper stay as it does on the FJR but people get around that easily. I "might" try it if and when I get a CB500X and mod it into a real adv bike in which the Tenere would become more pavement oriented as the CB500X would be my go to for off tarmac stuff.

Re: Car tire?

I ran a Dunlop Winter Sport (run flat) on my Vision for 23000 miles. I an the dragon, the snake, the diamond back and a bunch more and the tire was excellent. It had another 10-15k left in it when I traded the bike. The run flat was what I was after and the winter compound was softer with better grip.

Don't criticize what you do not understand. Ever hear of a guy who goes by Yellow Wolf? He has been running a car tire on his Goldwing and he will flat out spank 95% of sport bikes on the Dragon with his Goldwing running a car tire.

Most people who run car tires are very aware of the compromises. Most people who have never run one don't have a clue and just assume that only a fool would go to the dark side.

Per posts #34 and #41 of this thread, this thread is for tech content and the thread in the Debate Room is for just that.

Thanks

"Folks, you can post all the stuff that has been deleted from this thread. Just do it there and leave this thread for actual experience."

What I posts was my actual experience.

Re: Car tire?

In the local BMW club, a guest had a K1200LT with a car tire on the rear. While trying to keep up with the group, he took a corner quite fast and the tire lifted off the ground sufficiently that the contact patch was minimal, and caused the bike to lose traction and low sided. I was behind him and ended up pulling way back beforehand because I could see that the tire was basically lifting off of the ground, and felt that a crash was imminent.

I suppose if all you do are long straights, or gentle turns, a car tire might be ok. But what I witnessed was sufficient for me to be forever jaded about car tires on motorcycles.

Re: Car Tires - What people think are the negatives or want to debate

I know this thread is a little old but I'll still put in my 2 cents...I've had a car tire on my 2012 Goldwing for about 18,000 miles now and I'll replace it with another one if it ever wears out. I have ridden on Colorado twisties from Ouray to Silverton in the rain, In Canada, and all over the west. My favorite ride is in my backyard...It's the backway to Prescott and Jerome through Wickenburg with lots of turns in the mountains. This thing corners and handles fantastic. All you nay-sayers don't have a clue of what you're talking about because you have never experienced it. I even rode it up Moki Dugway 8)

Re: Re: Car Tires - What people think are the negatives or want to debate

We had a couple fro Austrailia stop by a few times this summer. They store an FJR in Dallas and come over to the states for a couple of months each summer. They ride two up and ride hard. In three years (six months of riding) they've put over 30,000 miles on the bike and have seen far more of the USA on motorcycle then most US riders. They run a car tire on the bike and get only about 15,000 miles on a tire. The first time they stopped in this summer it was to have me install a new tire they had purchased on Amazon. The old tire had over 1/3 of the tread left except for the shoulders. They were worn nearly bald. The couple are in their mid-60s, are heavily loaded and he's riding the edges off the tires. He has a second FJR in Australia with over 120,000 miles on it, all on car tires.

For anybody who missed when we had a hot debate about car vs mc tires, there are two threads. This one is for posting about experience.

The other thread is to debate whether using car tires on motorcycles will lead to nirvana or the end of civilization.

Thanks

Seems to me we share tire sizes with the VStrom and if so, this was an earlier post that should answer your question:

I cant think of any reason to put a bike tire on a car. They cost more and dont last as long and have a lower weight rating.
I believe there are a lot of touring bikes on the road that are exceeding the motorcycle tire manufacturers weight capacity when riding 2 with luggage. I know one couple with a Goldwing that experienced 2 rear tire failures before switching to a car tire and now have traveled many miles with no further problems. He is the type person that checks and maintains his bikes properly, not the guy that never checks tires or pressures.
Some of the old rat rodders used motorcycle tires on the front of their cars.

Few and far between for sure. I have heard that a 175/55/17 will fit and the only tire I've heard of in that size is an " Achilles Atr-k Economist 88v" but I've heard it doesn't return good wear which is one of the reasons to run a CT in the first place. It will be a good bit smaller in diameter too which will lower the rear compared to the front and increase the gear ratio {lower mechanically} which would make the bike spunkier.

I "think" there are a few 175/45/17s around too but if memory serves, they were snow tires. The 175/45 would be even smaller lowering the rear even more.
