A friend at work told me about this ride today: http://cannonballrides.ca/ There are 500 and 1000 mile options.

I haven't tried an organized event like this before but since I was planning to do a long day ride, I might sign up. There's no cost except for the patch if you succeed in completing the course. I likely won't go if the weather's not nice. I want to enjoy the ride. I've covered more than 1000km in a day before on sport bikes so it should be a more comfortable ride on the Tenere.

Anyone else thinking of doing one of the routes?

I was thinking September but looking at the map I don't think so. South west Ontario is bloody awful and riding the QEW no thanks.

On a very windy Sunday, I got up early and headed to the Harley Dealer in Kitchener for the start of the Cannonball 500. We had 12 hours to complete the 534 mile (860 km) route with 9 dealer stops along the way. We left at 7:00 am sharp. This would be longest day yet on the bike and I wanted to see how I would hold up. For Christmas my wife bought me an Airwalk seat as I found the factory seat a little hard after a few hours. I know it's criticized for the "loose" feel as you float above the seat but there is no doubt that it was much more comfortable than doing it without. It took almost exactly 11 hours for me to do the mapped out route. I think I was the first one back that actually finished the entire route completely. As I spoke with other riders, I noticed most we taking short cuts. I knew I wouldn't have any trouble finishing on time so there were no short cuts here.

At a gas stop in Owen Sound I saw this 750 Tenere. Very nice! I didn't see any Super Teneres in the rally but mine got a lot of questions and some nice comments at each stop.

After 11 hours I still felt like I could go on. I'm glad I tried this out as I've never done this before but I'm not sure I will do it again. If it was just for me, I would pick a much different route. Less highway and more scenic back roads.

Here are a couple of pictures at my stops.
