Anybody know if the ABS can be switched off? I saw nothing in the Users Manual that indicated it could be turned off.

It can be turned off. Put the bike on centrestand, let it idle or fast idle(slightly higher rpm) and engage second gear. After a while the ABS light will come on, indicating that that ABS is disengaged. To switch it back on, simply switch off the ignition and re-start the bike.

Must say that I never switch mine of as it is a great benefit in loose gravel and not remotely as harsh or scary as a BMW's ABS. One hardly notice it working on a loose surface. This bike do have the best ABS available in any bike and not just in its class. I tested it a number of times! I suppose it remains a matter of ones personal preference and own riding style.

Please let us know how you found the riding with and without ABS.

it's my understanding that abs will not be engaged when the rear brake is engaged first. for those folks who are fortunate enough to have an s10... is that true?

not sure where i read that, but it was on the internet somewhere so it has to be true. ;D

Rear brake .... nope don't think I've got one of those ;D

When the beer has worn off I'll check but I think that malarkey deactivates the linked braking not the ABS. Don't it?

The undefeatable ABS was concern for me on such a heavy bike pre purchase but it
is so well behaved under brakes that dirt roads dont even lift the heartrate.

From what I read the brakes are no longer linked when you use the rear brake first. Has nothing to do with the ABS.

Thats correct, the brakes are only linked if you operate the front lever on it's own, you can download the full manual from the Yamaha website, it explains it in detail.

A post on Adventure bike site shows a South African dealer who installs a ABS on /off switch. It looked good and they may sell direct.
I would like to find out if you can lock the bike in sport mod/ traction control setting 2 or off.
Does anyone know if you can this as a default so the bike stays in this set up each time it is started?

Jason, it doesn't affect the ABS. When you tap the rear brake first, it disengages the linked/unified braking so front brakes front and rear brakes rear. From all I've read of those who have the bike and ride in the dirt, they leave the ABS alone (except the Angola ride guys) and use the #2 setting for the TCS. If the #1 is left on, from wha they say, it won't let any sliding take place but #2 will. Well #3 will turn it off, so some may use that too. I don't know.

when the rear end on the dr650 starts to slide the only that happens is my britches get soiled. :)

ya. i'm not a real dirt rider at all, but i do like dirt/gravel roads. i don't run them like a bat out of hell, though. that ground tends to hurt.

" that ground tends to hurt"

I don't need to be reminded about that!! I will not be agressive either if I get off road.

Re: Safety recall

Hi, just heard there has been a safety recall in Oz for the S10. The recall has been for a cracking base plate for the factory top box. Has this been an issue for any owners or does anyone have any info on the recall.

Is that a part that comes with the optional accessory or the actual OEM tail carrier?

Our Yamaha importer, witch i called today due to accessory delivery problems, confirmed me today that all delivery's of the top case are stopped and won't resume before 2011 because of safety problems with the luggage rack.
