I know this has been discussed but I can't seem to find a tutorial specific the the S10 on how to JUST change the cam chain tensioner. At some point I will tackle a valve check but for now all I want to do is put in the upgraded tensioner. Even the service manual isn't clear on how to change it. At least I can't find it in the manual.

Thanks

I’ve done it a million and one times. It’s really a ton to type. Parts of it are how something feels. I don’t know you type that up. It’s not 100% black and white. I’ll be happy to talk you through it over the phone. If at any point anyone makes a small mistake the chain will pop off the cam sprocket and now you get to pull the top end apart to reset the cams.

It’s happened to me before, I had to go back and re set it all up again. I have the experience, just lots more time.

I’m sure some one will pop in here with about 5-10 bullet points on “how to do it”. There is a bit more to it, not to screw it up.

What year and mileage? Call Jaxon, nobody knows these bikes like he does. The job is easy, but can be catastrophic tricky.

The bike is a 2012 with just over 40,000 miles. I bought it from a retired aircraft mechanic who did all the maintenance (including the valve clearance) except the CTT. I don't have enough experience with the bike to know how it should sound, it doesn't sound bad, but it does sometimes sound a bit like a diesel. I am not sure if that is normal, or the 1st gen clutch, or the CCT. I thought I would try to replace the CCT first and see if that improves it.

I'll be doing mine soon and will most likely be following the directions on this older thread

One thing worth doing is placing some sound deadener on the inside of the bash plate if you have one, I did mine recently and the difference in noise level is significant and well worth doing

The cct will not help with these noisy engine. The cct will only cause noise at start up with a chain rattle. It'll start with a short rattle and get longer as time goes by. I changed mine out with the first updated cct 60k miles ago. Haven't had a rattle since. No wondering if it needs adjustment. I've heard of a couple of engines being destroyed by the first original cct but not either one of the updated ones. YET

The clutch can be particularly noisy on the Gen1 versions of this bike. However, I’d still be changing the CCT with your mileage on a Gen1.

First of all, you should take a picture of the tensioner you have on….to see what you have on

Since the weather now feels like winter with upper elevation snow and the snow levels dropping soon, I plan on doing some maintenance since I won't be riding. I haven't done a lot of research into this, but since there has been some mentions of the clutch, what clutch kit would you recommend I purchase to install?

2014 and newer OEM clutch basket will fix the chatter. Not necessary for performance but if the chatter bugs you then that's the best option.
Personally, I don't even notice it but I've owned Ducatis so, comparatively, the S10 clutch is whisper quiet.

Is there an aftermarket basket or just the OEM one? The OEM one seems pretty pricey. If it is just normal, I can live with it, I just need someone to actually see/hear it in person and say "Yeah that's normal" or "No, something isn't right and get it fixed".

I think Barnett makes a spring conversion kit for it but I've no experience with it. I've run Barnett clutches on other bikes but haven't seen the need to on this one.

Maybe take a video of your bike at start-up and post a link. Make sure you place it near the CCT at start up and then move it near the clutch area after a bit. As long as the sound quality is good, we should be able to tell you what it sounds like.

Noisy Gen1 clutch basket is normal and not actually a fault. The Gen2 basket was upgraded and fairly heavily modified. Swapping the baskets over definitely quietens the bike down and also almost completely eliminates clutch chudder, although not all bikes suffered with it.

I swapped baskets about 4-5 years and 30k miles ago. My bike is much much better for it. Smoother, quieter and just all round nicer to ride. Expensive but easy upgrade.
