Broken side panels? Brittle plastic?

I headed into the garage today to perform some annual maintenance on the Tenere. I was surprised to find that both of my right side panels are broken where the upper and lower panels fasten together. The plastic on the lower cover appears to have become very very brittle. Almost like plastic that has been exposed to lots of sunlight and UV light. The weird thing is, my bike is only outdoors when rides. Current mileage is 25,000 and I live way too far north for this to happen.

I’m going to dig into it further tomorrow and see if I can somehow fix it up but I’m not hopeful.

Has anyone else experienced broken panels? The bike has Altrider crash bars and hasn’t been down. I’m finding this quite weird actually as it’s been stored in my garage all winter and hasn’t been hit or toyed with.

If anyone can source me a couple of used panels, I would appreciate it.

My lower right panel is broken in a couple places, not at any fastener locations, tho. JB Weld is holding it together, there is likely better epoxies specifically for this plastic.

If you want a quick patch, use superglue and sprinkle baking soda into it. Dries instantly due to chemical reaction, hard as nails. Beats waiting 24 hours.

Could use this to reinforce the other areas that aren't yet broken as well.

I otherwise don't know of a solution other than to replace the panel, but perhaps someone else has better ideas.

Plastic welder maybe? Won't look very nice. Has me wondering if I should get wrapped, to protect from UV damage.

It's the same ABS as most any other bike out there. As others mentioned, time will leave it more brittle, as will cold.

New panels are a definite. I’m hoping to pick up a couple of salvage pieces but no luck on eBay at the moment.

The lower panels should remain somewhat the same over the years I would think? I don’t know if the top metallic black panel is still available from Yamaha. Will have to call the dealer tomorrow and see.

Not sure if this is the right part you are looking for but partzilla shows they ship in 3-4 days. Probably cheaper than the dealer.

Thanks for looking into this on my behalf. This panel is still available from Yamaha as I guess it’s a generic colour for most years. I can get it for $175 ish before taxes here in Canada. I’ll likely just go that route as international shipping and the dollar exchange rate is going to kill me living north of the border.

The top, painted panel however is going to be much tougher to find. It is currently listed as “back ordered” but I suspect this part is no longer in production and will stay back ordered indefinitely.

The 2016 Tenere has a very similar paint scheme. Can anyone comment on how closely it matches the 2012 metallic black?

Get whatever color you can find, then wrap to match.
The bike has a metallic flake paint job so if I go this route I would have to wrap the entire bike. I would prefer not to go down that road at the moment but thanks for the suggestion.

I thought that manufacturers had to supply replacement parts for 10 years. Dan V. may be onto something. Get hold of Bighuck, and see if he has a cool wrap for the whole piece. Just a thought.

Hey guys,

I’m having a tough time sourcing the top right side panel for my 2012. It appears the 2016 Tenere has a very similar colour scheme. I cross referenced both years on the Yamaha Parts Catalogue and got the following:

3C83E6C6-E3CB-4DC9-91AD-1F8B6D43697B.jpeg

Notice that both years have the Color “Black Matallic X”, however the 2012 (Part # 23P-2842N-00-P2) is listed as Color Type B while the 2016 ( Part # 23P-2842N-00-P9) is listed as Color Type A.

Anyone know the difference between Color types? Has anyone seen both models together and can provide a comment on how close they match?

Appreciate any feedback provided...

:) It's my favorite shop trick. Once that stuff sets up, you practically have to chisel it off. It's strong as hell, like a chemical concrete. It's not fragile like you'd expect.

I most recently used it to fix a plastic undertray on my Avalanche that was all cracked near the mounting bolts. Worked great.

[Edit] While I can't really help with the upper panel search, I would point out that the upper panel on my 2019 is unpainted (i.e., it matches the panel below it). Could feasibly use it as a "last resort" option if you can't find the correct painted one and don't want to vinyl-wrap/paint everything -- only the trained eye of other Tenere owners would spot the difference. Won't look as nice, though -- hopefully you can find the correct one.

I’m hoping your “shop trick” has solved my issue with respect to the upper panel. If I have to order the lower panel (that is in stock) so be it!

I don't know if you found the part.
I can tell you my case, I bought a 2018 BLUE & b,ack model but I didn't like the matt black cowling.
I bought tne 2014 model blue cowling and fits perfect.
I suspect tnat the glossy black is the same case.

If you are having to bend or flex the panel (because of accessories or some such added underneath) to attach the fasteners, that residual stress will eventually crack the plastic at the thinnest, highest stress point. This will be accelerated by other factors such as sunlight, solvent (spilled gas?) etc..

This right here! I need to relocate some accessory wires. I believe there is some outward pressure from the wires.
