Re: That's the last time I buy Yamaha rear brake pads...

EBC-HH front and back.
The fact that the breaks work simultaneously puts more wear on the rear.
When I mash the front breaks and I have my foot lightly touching the rear break pedal applying no pressure I can feel it move on it's own.
I do admit I use the rear on slow tight corners.

I have to say riding a bike and the replacements you need to do is like blowing through Socks and underwear, it's never ending.. :'(

Re: That's the last time I buy Yamaha rear brake pads...

Coming late to the party with my 'new' (1+ year-old) 2012 ST, I'm also finding premature wear and scoring of the rear the rear brake disk. At 30K miles, the OEM brake pads still have something left but the disks are toast. It's gotta be the OEM pads that are causing this. I will try the EBC HH pads next along with a new disk. As other posters have noted, the rear brake on this bike gets hot during normal riding. This seems to occur even with a thorough bleeding of the hydraulics and cleaning/regreasing of the caliper during tire changes.

Hitting 30k within the next ride my rotor shows normal use with the EBC HH pads, may be changing them in another 3k.
My front pads are ready for change before my next ride, been on the bike since day one of owning it the front rotors are from KTM and show not a scratch.

My OEM front rotors show no unusual wear at 30K+ mi and the original pads have lots of wear life left. My guess is that the abnormal rear rotor wear was caused by improper sintering of the OEM pads (poor powder metallurgy practice) allowing road grit to get trapped in the pores. The HH pads should cure that.

New pads ?

I was wondering about front brake pads. I've only got about 6k miles on bike but front brake seems weaker and kinda grabby. I bled the brakes but didn't make much difference. I'm thinking changing out the pads I usually use Galfer sintered pads on my road bikes. Anybody using after market pads on the front if so let me know how there working out.
Thanks

Re: New pads ?

You're replacing front pads after 6000 miles? I've got double that milage on my bike and the original pads still have a long way to go before replacement. I admit I don't do hard breaking very often though.

I usually use two or three sets of rear pads to one set of front pads. Your break dragging or do you rest you hand on the front break lever?

Re: New pads ?

I don't need pads I just don't like the "feel" of the front brake and looking to see if changing the pads out to possibly a sintered pad might help. It's mainly under hard braking where it seems like the amount of pressure applied at the lever should provide more stopping power. Maybe it's the ABS or size of master cylinder but I was thinking trying different pads. Also it's not a very smooth or linear feel to it, starts out slow then grabs quick.

Good Lord, man! That is inordinate rear brake wear, even for the Super Tenere, which seems to eat up rear brake pads at a disturbing rate. On all of my previous bikes, I have always worn two sets of front pads for every one rear set, which is as it should be, and indicates proper braking technique. I think because of the linked braking system, the Super Ten wears rear pads much faster than I am accustomed to.

Re: New pads ?

I normally use GoldFren or EBC HH when I've changed brake pads on other bikes, have not had to yet with the S10, however I did change to organic rear pads as they are prone to wear quickly as they are linked to the front (UBS) and I'd rather change pads than rotors, as sintered like to eat the rotors. Change to whatever you like to achieve the 'feel' you need, you can always change back if no improvement is found. But please come back and post an updated report if you do. ::008::

Because of my past training (riding cones at rodeos and such as an Officer) I use a lot of rear brake only for maneuvering on slow procedures. Old habits die hard....

Understood. For parking lot slow maneuvers and parade duty, rear brake use is very necessary. ::003::

Re: New pads ?

I would try http://www.ferodoracing.com/products/motorcycle/brake-pads-and-shoes/sintergrip-road-st/

Ferodo pads worked well on my R1150GS and I had acquired a pair off Ebay to put on my Super Tenere, but changed bikes before fitting them.

Fortunately, the Ferodos will fit my Yamaha MT09 Tracer as Yamaha uses the same brake pads on most of the range.

One caveat is the extra friction of the HH rated pads may result in the discs wearing faster.

Re: Chinese brake rotor ?

I personally don't see anything wrong with the Chinese stuff, but as a word of advice, you may want to do what I did, change the rear pads to organic, not HH, that way the pads will wear out without too much wear on the rotor, as it's easier and cheaper to replace pads.....
