I get that they were goin for a dual purpose rack....use both the lower mount & the plate for std height. Or use only the plate on the spacers for a lower height to match the platform height with the rear seat removed. Neat idea...but execution leaves a bit to be desired. Prob as simple as the type of bolts as stated previously.

Honestly I see things totally different..... Personally if I install a part and it leaves me completely dissatisfied and unreliable Im NOT going to install the same thing twice.....

Id say the other option youre gonna have if you run the part again is not run with your top box 24/7. Leave it off and mount it on trips when you need the extra storage. Rely on your side bags for normal storage....

BTW, you cant go wrong with a Bumot top box and rack..... Great reliable addition.... Lotsa storage and zero issues....

The Givi top plate is quite a bit thicker, all bends and cuts are well radiused, much stouter than the Alt Rider “design”.

I've got a Bumot topcase and rack that's got about 20 miles on it collecting dust. I didn't care for the height, weight and shape. The lower profile and oval shape of the Givi seems better for me. I'm running the Altrider rack again because it has a bigger base and my lithium pack fits its in the lower hole like a glove. I'm not gonna load it like I did the rack I shattered. That rack lasted 30k miles and had been abused.

Hard to believe ALT Rider actually built them so poorly
I honestly don't think they are built poorly at all. I am of the opinion that riders are overloading these beyond the recommended 11lb capacity. 11lbs adds up quick! Both standard and additional carrier are only rated for 22lbs combined. I'm close or right at the limit with mine. My 30 litter duffle and rear 1150 Pelican with tools is close to 22 lbs if not slightly over. When I swap over for camping, the duffle holds sleeping bag, tent, air pillow/mattress.

I started making a template to build a temporary rear rack so I could use my topbox until I decide which direction to go. When I looked at the template it looked askew, not square. I took a pic and drew some straight lines and one angled line just to check this. Jeez. You can see it below. I have a hunch that this is how it was manufactured. Not saying that this was the cause of my bottom part blowing up, but it does make me wonder about the overall design and build quality. BTW, AltRider never responded to my query about the parts, including how I could even buy a new bottom part of the rack if I wanted to go that route.

Its mostly about those loooong bolts n spacers they use...creates a terrible pivot point

Nice top mount! What bracket is that?

I have the Alt Rider ready for install. Didn't see this thread when I was researching. I have a top case mount somewhat like it from Happy Trails on my DRZ that has the same type of pocket as the Alt Rider. It is nice to leave my tools in that pocket.

Following the advice here I will install some longer hardware to compensate for some wider washers to help spread the load.

When I see stuff like this, and I see the price tag they charge for it, well, it's what inspires me to make my own stuff.

A piece of 3/16" aluminum plate, with 1/8" angle for the sides, made with a handheld jigsaw, a coping saw, a power drill and some hand files. Mine's not going to break no matter what sits on it. For the price that these racks are, I would think that symmetry is the least you could expect.

No one is going to care more about your bike than you. Great job.

Some thoughts and not from any expertise bending metal.

Since aluminum work hardens and the cracks seem to originate from mounting points, does it make sense to try and insulate the mounting points from vibration?

Yes, it makes sense to me. I have some hardware and rubber washers ordered to modify mine. I don't want to buy another rack.

Nice work RCinNC! I called AltRider today and just ordered a new one so I could use my Givi. AltRider is discontinuing them and, hence, gave me a good deal at $150 out the door. Told me they were hardly getting any orders, mostly because the ST 700 was getting all the attention. Apparently, they're getting calls on 700 parts constantly. She also told me that they reworked the S10 rack about 5 years back, making it sturdier. We'll see when I get it if I had the "flimsier" one. This was also after I called Bumot (advmotorrad.com), from whom I bought my cases and some other stuff. He told me they weren't going to get any new Bumot top boxes in until around Oct due to shipping delays out of Bulgaria. I was ready to dole out the money for the Bumot and their rack, but not waiting until October to have a top box. I find them so damn convenient.

Mine is a custom made bottom storage mount with a Givi M3 plate bolted on.

The Metal miles rack is made of tubular steel and does not seem to suffer from any kind of weakness in that respect. Also comes with pillion handles
