this is robbing me of sleep. everytime I roll over in bed I am thinking about bmw gs motorcycles ..... haven't spent a penny and its costing me sleep.
Get a quote for the insurance and for the tags. Then for an aftermarket warranty. Those quotes may slow your roll a bit. ;)

Was on a ride out in Colorado last week and one of the riders was riding a 1250 GS, I was really impressed with BMW’s idea for adjustable windshield, just one very simple to turn nob and the windshield adjusted very nicely while riding or standing still, I couldn’t believe how nice it worked !

They use the same system on the 1200GS and GSA. That's what's on the wife's '16 GSA. It's a little hard to adjust while moving, and kinda shaky, but a nice set up for one hand adjusting and certainly quick and easy to crank on at a stop.

Funny that i come from R1200gsa lc and move to Tenere 1200.. is just that is the best Jap adventure touring bike and that is what i can get.
I upgraded my R12gs to K16Ga and i miss the adventure touring feels. However, i couldn't afford another GS at this moment while having K16GA. So for the moment, Tenere suit me most.

I've owned a GS. It has the same problem as other German vehicles... if you keep them for a long time, they get really expensive. They have the unique combination of requiring frequent repairs, and those repairs being very expensive. Enjoy your new bike.

It's far easier and cheaper to own an old S10 than an old GS. My advice, trade it in when the warranty period is up. For those of us who are on a budget and just like to pile on the miles over the years, the substandard S10 is a better choice.

I beat the crap out of my tenere on the white rim trail in moab last Friday... dont think I missed a rock the whole way.... my line was what ever was in front of me I ran it down , 2438 miles for the trip , some battle damage (I can park at starbucks with pride now ) burnt out rear brake ….. think I could leave tomorrow and do another 2000 no sweat. but..... my neck , or that spot between the shoulders is still screaming and really that discomfort (eating advil like m&m's ) really took away from the trip ….. ive done risers ,seats ,all the prescribed things ,still a knife in the neck after some time...… if a gsa 1250 would fix that I would be in.... now if thye choice was tenere or GSA on the WRT , tenere for me . she never let me down ….. may have to trailer her as I am tired of the discomfort.

Long distance and long days are a form of exercise so without build-up to a fast 2438 miles, you probably would have the pains on any bike.

Sounds like it was a heck of a great trip though!

Handlebar risers maybe? I get pain there too, much less with the bars up an inch.

Wife was encouraging me to go for a GS, money was not an issue, but then I think about service, think about reliability, my unwillingness to work on the bike myself. And hey- a bike is a toy for me, I suspect for most of us. My toys should not cause grief. I have spent a lot of time on two GS's, yes they are great bikes. But .... service issues.... parts costs...... the many recalls- very happy with my S10, thank you. I just wish it had a nicer sound.

Just curious when you on pavement and cruise how much of the time do you relax riding one handed or just finger tips? How much moving around?

Don't assume just by reading all the BS, handlebar risers will fix neck pain. Lower bars better for neck for me at least. I do a lot of walking to build the neck up for riding. Get rid of the risers first.

discomfort without risors , discomfort with risors , do the finger tip thing one hand thing ,all the above. most of my trips are 150 mile to 300 mile so for sure this was serious saddle time . have not tried a different bar with a different bend , probably won't spend the money to do that now on a 7 year old bike. it could be a posture thing , im a sloucher at times , always trying to be sure im sitting up straight . modular helmet when open catches air pulling my head up seems top help at times , but feel open to injury as face is exposed . be awhile before I do another trip (long like this one ) probably in the spring .

if I could rent a bmw just to see if there was an actual difference by doing a long trip on it , that could be interesting.

I rented a 1200GS from Eagle Rider in New Orleans a couple of years ago. A little pricey but I got a good feel for the bike in the 24 hours I had it. Did what I asked of it. Eagle Rider is all over the US and the types of bikes available seems to vary.

I saw an article that Hertz is bringing a motorcycle rental service to the US with BMWs.

You might also consider talking to a therapist about doing some exercises to help with your issues, proper exercise can sometimes make a huge difference with these types of problems.

It's pretty easy to rent BMWs. Not real cheap, but easy. And damage is $$$$ when you turn it in. Las Vegas BMW has a fleet of BMW rentals. I was there one time getting service done on the wife's bike and a guy returned his F800GS. $45 for a cracked roundel emblem on the side of the tank. $200+ for scratches to panniers and more after that. Read the fine print if you rent one.
