We just made reservations for site 504. I'll be bringing a travel trailer so I'll probably throw the T7 in the back of the truck. I spent a few days exploring the paved roads in this area a couple years ago so I'm looking forward to seeing some of the non-paved stuff.

Looking forward to this trip and i have a question:

What riding will we do?

I am really torn about tires. I am a novice level off road rider so i would like to avoid anything requiring knobbies.

If the group wants to do more challenging stuff i will happily to explore solo. I dont want to hold anyone back.

I was thinking of shinko 804/805s but id have ti waste an entire set of bws that i cannot remount (not a single installer in 100 miles will install used tires, so once they are off i cannot remount and they are *new*.

Thoughts?

I’m bringing my wife, and my bike is our way there and home. My wife does not like to do any off pavement riding. There will be plenty of riding to be had for stock tires. Or bring a spare set and we can change them there. Easy to spoon on and off.

Pay no attention to the childish schoolyard Meme posted. I have ridden the Black Hills and know how quick the terrain can change. Houdek Loam found in the Midwest is no joke.

Here is my experience changing tires on a Super Tenere. It is the easiest bike I have come across:

I highly recommend you to run the 804/805 combo. An open block knobby is the only safe tire that can be used off pavement no matter the riding skill. Taking a 600+ lb bike off pavement is no time to experiment with a compromise tire.

Uhhh, someone forgot to tell my bike it can’t go off-road with the stock tires. And just because you can’t, doesn’t mean others lack the skills to navigate the Super Tenere off pavement on oem tires.

Gunslinger, don’t worry, there will be no better time to experiment than with other owners of the same bike on the same terrain.

Rode the entire 100+ miles of the White Rim trail with the OEM tires. Solo.

Mud changes everything and NO tire on a 600lb bike works well.

If you want send the tires to the campground and I’ll help you put them on there. A9A27E2A-1017-4A09-9554-5B76A55862D2.jpeg

You misunderstand my point Mark. It's not about what one can do with smooth tires. It's about being smart and safe when going in a low traction environment. I commend you for your riding skill. OTOH it does a disservice to brag about unsafe off road adventures and being lucky enough to walk away from it.

This a one of the reasons these rallies can be a danger to those who take bad advice from riders who argue in favor of poor riding practices and bike setup that can cause serious injury or death.

Riding a bike can cause serious injuries and death. One needs to know one’s limitations. There will be plenty of rides that are safe-with oem tires. Scaring people with imminent death if they leave pavement is false. It depends on the person and their skill level.

Chris-Have you ever ridden with anyone here on the forum? Can someone vouch for your off road abilities? I’m not asking to put you down, it comes across as you are an expert level rider. Some of your advice is suspect. And when called out you backpedal and say your a “novice level” rider. I’ll find past posts if need be.

Knobbies are better when going off pavement.

Going off pavement with a “dual sport” tire doesn’t mean certain injuries or death.

Hopefully you can make the get together on your Super Tenere. It’s going to be great riding on or off road.

I have not ridden with any forum member here exception of a gentleman locally up to Crystal lake. I have no need for anyone to vouch for my riding ability. I error on the side of caution and get my enjoyment from proper setup and being safety minded in a risky sport. No worries on my end on what anyone wants to judge about me.

My advice being suspect is in the eyes of whatever your comfort level to risk might be. I minimize my risks by proper riding techniques and choice of setting up my bike. I take a very hard stance on tire choice off road because I have watched riders wad up bikes that would have otherwise stayed upright had they used the correct tire.

I'll not be going to this rally. And I wish everyone the best on this get together. I have already explored most all of the Black Hills on a past ride.

I am right there with you. I am planning on pavement riding. Maybe a super easy and super slow gravel road to get to something cool to see on my stock tires. My son will be there with me on a Honda NC700D. He has no off pavement experience. I have approximately 50 miles more than that. My buddy will be with us on his 1200GS. Although he has some gravel riding experience, he has told me that he has very little interest in it. So don't worry about riding solo, there will be 3 of us that you can ride with.

At this time of the year Crazy Horse and Needles Highway are going to be a blast.

I was able to ride some of the trails in the Black Hills last fall.
From what I seen there will be a lot of trails we can ride with stock tires.
There was lots of trails just meandering through beautiful forest that are perfectly smooth almost groomed soil. Easier to ride than a gravel road.
I never took many pictures but here are a few.

Pay no attention to people that post here then say they aren't going. Those of us that are going, have the ability to ride something that you may or may not find more challenging will be there to help you out.

Like many folks, I rode my stock tires until they were worn out. When I replaced them, YES I went with a more ADV tire. What works for me may not work for, can you get in over your head, sure. It is all part of the adventure......

I am taking my toyhauler, buy me a beer (AND REMIND ME) and I will carry my tire changer up there. Yea I can help you out. Bet you can get a few other "advanced" riders to help you out.

And I have never blamed my setup for mistakes, I have only learned from them.

I hadn't been on gravel or dirt since the '70s when I sold my Bighorn 350, and certainly never on a 600 lb bike. I bought my Tenere on August 31, 2019. I quickly learned that I was a total noob off-pavement. However, I learned a LOT while riding with some other Tenere riders, including eemsreno and Mak10. And the old Clint Eastwood quote: "A man's got to know his limitations," along with my addition of "and respect them" became my mantra.

Rest assured that there will be plenty of folks there at the rally that will be riding pavement and/or easy gravel/dirt and at safe and sane speeds. And it will be a terrific opportunity to expand and improve your skills, at your pace, when you feel ready. And if you drop your bike, there's no shame in it, you'll have understanding folks there to help you pick it up and get you going again.

the black hills has plenty of asphalt, run your street tires and roll 60 MPH........

I will be doing the same when the wife rides, but I will also take a day and hit the dirt. If you have a 80/20 tire you can ride dirt roads. Just slow down a bit and remember rain changes the game.
Sounds great. I do a lot of logging roads now on the battlewings and have had traction issues as i keep my speeds conservative
