In.

Booked a cabin for the first three nights. I may go break out on my own for the fourth night and camp somewhere more remote.

See you fools there.

Look for the white tenere with the norse symbol on the tank.

i did notice in the other thread you said you were hammock camping, I asked and they did have sites that will accommodate hammocks. That’s what I’m bringing

I'm most likely in....the Mrs surprised me and said she would like to attend also, so I will be decorum-ish no matter where I'm at. And since she is coming along that means we'll be in a hotel room close by.

I'm going, one way or another. Anyone else from AL, GA, MS, or TN going?

It's almost 1400 miles from my home in north Alabama, or about 23 - 23 hrs riding time. I don't know if I'm gonna ride it or trailer my bike up there. I've got a couple of nice trailers that can haul 2, maybe 3, bikes each, and a new truck to pull one with.

And I'd be interested in sharing a cabin with someone.

TN/MS here, I am not not sure if the MRS is going or not. That will determine if I trailer (RV) or ride there and tent camp. I can let you know when it gets closer.

My wife Tamara decided she wants to re-visit the Black Hills so she will be riding with me on her FJR. She used to tent camp but she's not comfortable with that since she had both hips replaced, so we will be in cabin 12.

Ride ideas:
Motorcycle Travel Itinerary
One of the best ways to enjoy Custer and the Black Hills is with a scenic motorcycle ride.

Morning:
Start the morning off with a drive along the 18-mile Wildlife Loop in Custer State Park. Bison, Bighorn Sheep, Antelope, Elk are all permanent residents of the park and can generally be seen from the roadway. Mornings are a great time to spot the wildlife since they tend to be more active.

Mid-Morning:
Stay in Custer State Park and head toward Needles Highway (SD Highway 87). This 14-mile ride winds through granite spires and narrow rock tunnels. The Needles are a defining landmark of Black Hills geology. Keep following Needles Highway to Iron Mountain Road where you will travel along pigtail bridges and through three rock tunnels, all with views of Mount Rushmore National Memorial.

Afternoon:
Head north on the toward the town of Sturgis—home to one of the largest motorcycle rallies in the world. Sturgis Bike week occurs every August and attracts thousands of bikers.

Late Afternoon/Evening:
After touring Sturgis head to Spearfish Canyon. Spearfish Canyon State and National Forest Service Scenic Byway (US 14A) takes you through the canyon-filled limestone cliffs, gushing waterfalls and dozens of awe-inspiring views.

National Parks, Monuments and Historic Sites Sample Tour Itinerary
Duration: 2 days

The Black Hills are home to one of the largest concentration of national and public parks in the country. Take a few days and see them all.

Day 1
Mount Rushmore National Memorial
Approx. 25 minutes north of Custer

Start your National Parks, Monuments and Historic Sites tour off at the Shrine of Democracy—Mount Rushmore National Memorial. The best light on the mountain is in the morning when the faces are fully lit. Be sure to stop at the Lincoln Borglum Museum and Sculptor’s Studio to learn all about this magnificent mountain carving. After your tour, enjoy breakfast with the presidents at the Carvers Café.

Crazy Horse Memorial
approx 23 minutes south of Mount Rushmore

While Crazy Horse Memorial is not part of the National Parks system is a monumental experience you can’t miss in the Black Hills. The ongoing mountain carving is the largest in the world. While at the Memorial be sure to stop by The Indian Museum of North America. This museum houses a collection of artifacts, clothing and artwork from tribes all across North America. Enjoy lunch at the Laughing Waters Restaurant where you can dine on Tatanka (buffalo) Stew or Native American Tacos.

Wind Cave National Park
Approx 23 minute from Crazy Horse Memorial

Wind Cave National Park, one of our nation’s oldest national parks, is spectacular both above and below the surface. Above the ground you can explore one of the few remaining mixed-grass prairies as you wander along 30 miles of hiking trails. Below the surface you can tour the complex passageways and rare boxwork of the world’s fourth longest cave. Ranger guided cave tours vary in length and difficulty so give yourself plenty of time.

Crazy Horse Memorial “Legends in Light” Laser Show
Cap off day one of your National Parks, Monuments and Historic Sites tour with a return to Crazy Horse Memorial for a spectacular laser light show presented nightly from Memorial Day to Native American Day weekend in October.

Day 2
Jewel Cave National Monument
Approx 15 minutes west of Custer

Start day two of your National Parks, Monuments and Historic Sites tour off at Jewel Cave National Monument. The cave is named for the sparkling calcite “jewels” that adorn its narrow caverns. At just over 144 miles long, Jewel Cave is the world’s second longest cave and researchers continue to map new passageways all the time.

Badlands National Park
Approx. 120 miles from Custer

Grab your hiking shoes and a cold drink for a car ride to Badlands National Park. With its moon-like surfaces, jagged spires and sharply eroding buttes, the Badlands are a place like no other on earth. Antelope, Bighorn Sheep and the endangered Black Footed Ferret all reside within the park’s boundaries.

Minuteman National Historic Site
South entrance to Badlands National Park

Stand in the launch room of a real Cold War era nuclear missile with a visit to the Minuteman National Historic Site. This unique park has preserved both a missile silo and launch room dating back to the Cuban Missile Crisis. Tours have limited space so be sure to plan ahead for this attraction.

Mount Rushmore National Memorial Lighting Ceremony
End your Black Hills National Parks, Monuments and Historic Sites tour with a return trip to Mount Rushmore National Memorial for the nightly lighting ceremony. A moving and patriotic ceremony is held nightly from Memorial Day weekend to late September. This is one of the National Parks systems most popular programs.

Hopefully some of you that have been to the area have some suggestions. I’ll have my wife with and she doesn’t like any off road. I’m hoping to break away one of the days and do some trails. A compromise of sorts.

Are you going via Yellowstone? After the Park if you take the 14a out of Cody it is a neat road. About 32 miles east of Lovell is a well maintained dirt road that goes to an ancient Native American prayer wheel. The dirt part is 4 miles RT. Those in the know figure the wheel is between 300 to 800 years old.

At Burgess Junction, where the 14a meets back up with the 14 is when the road gets fun. Staying on that route will also take you past Devils Tower aka the Big Stump... The "hike" (on a sidewalk) around DT is well worth the time it takes IMHO.

There are pictures on my blog from our last trip there if you are interested.

By July we should have some nice black top or gravel loops GPX files for those that want to stay on the roads. I have in mind a day trip road loop out to Devils tower, a second one out to Bad Lands national park, maybe another road loop up to Sturgis, Deadwood, Lead for touristy things, and of course we will have a must ride Iron Mountain Road, Needles Hwy, Custer State Park wildlife loop road loop. I'll try to pick up a stack of Black Hills maps and have them available which shows all of the best roads and sights. Black Hills Motorcycle map This map is made for road bikes so it doesn't include any of the great gravel back roads.

Black Hills Burger and Bun in Custer is good is you’re looking for something close to the campground. Check the hours and be prepared to wait.
