Bike Refuses to Start changing filter attached to the Fuel pump

Today, I took out the fuel pump and replaced the filter that that is attached to the pump. I then replaced everything as I think I found it. But the bike refuses to start. It seems very clear that fuel is not following for some reason I do not understand. Sometimes when I hit the ignition, I can see the dash board lights go off completely. What could the problem be?

I have checked the spark plugs and they are fine.

Please help and thank you in advance.

Did you verify that the vent lines are not pinched when you put the tank back down?

If the dash lights go out when trying start then it's an electrical issue, flat battery. Worth checking that and what EricV said about the vent lines routed correctly.

The battery is new, and fully charged. Not sure what the vent lines are but if you mean those two tubes leading out of the tank, no they are not pinched. Is there a specific way of putting back the pump?

Yes, the pump has a paint mark to line up the orientation.

You'll hear it prime when you turn the ignition to the ON position.

MZee, this is a long shot, but try one of your other keys, preferably a much newer key than the one you use now.

It's got to be that electrickery thing.

I can only suggest you lift the tank again & re-check the connections to everything that was touched. If you are absolutely sure the battery is good (sorry, we've heard that said before) then check the terminals & earth connections. Then, put a meter on the battery & see what voltage readings are showing when you swith on, then when you hit the starter button. The readings should help to guide us.

Can you hear the pump prime at any stage? Does the dash loose the clock or any other info? Does the starter motor show any inclination wahtsoever?

Good luck with the gremlin.

Just for clarification, was the bike running ok before you took the pump out, or was it broke down and that was why you tore it down?

Did you separate the two halves of the pump when you removed it?

I've had the pump out a couple of times, both separated and not. There isn't much to go wrong.

Are you sure the electrical connections are fully clicked into place?

Have you verified there is power to the connector?

Have you checked the fuse with a DMM or test light?

Mzee, you could be knee-deep in a hard start event. Try removing the FI fuse trick, then WOT when attempting to start. Be sure to charge that battery or upgrade to the 14.

Good news. The bike is running. I needed my bike to ride because I use it every day. I could not figure out the problem even with all your help. So I sent it to a Yamaha mechanic fixed it. He said that I seem to have replaced the first filter at the bottom of the pump, but a second filter needed to be cleaned somewhere in the pump. Are there two filters in the pump? ???

I spoke to him on phone, I am going to meet him sometime to come and will report back. I think knowing this information is useful for similar situations.

Thank you everyone for your greatness and insights.
