The thing is these tests are mostly bullshit, the fact is if you can afford an unreliable superbike dressed up as an Adventure bike that you cant trust then great, but as most of you know across the pond 150bhp isnt much use when its broke down in the middle of nowhere.. Most of the time you will be on road so as the tester says " you know where the front wheel is on the Tenere " i will take that over 150bhp any day.

What a joke. A bunch of sport bike guys take ADV bikes out and dump and break one on the first day, get a replacment bike and do a "pavement only" test, whine about exhaust note and Hp. Pretty much what you get from a group of people most riders would call poseurs.

No details on what broke on the AT, just that it was puking oil after hitting a root. IE, no crash protection and a weak point, but we're not going to say that because Honda gave us not just one bike, but two for our 'testing' and write ups.

They did finish the test with a dirt evaluation. ( http://www.motorcycle.com/shoot-outs/2018-big-bore-adventure-touring-shootout-part-2-dirt) Although I am not a fan of Scott Rousseau's reporting he is a dirt rider. I am not interested in having all of the "hi tech" stuff on the other bikes. It is interesting that the Tenere gets dinged for lack of hi tech and the V-Strom is refreshing as it doesn't have all the hi tech. There is also a 2016 test where the Tenere is the bike leaking oil from a hole in the sump after dragging over a rock. (http://www.motorcycle.com/shoot-outs/2016-wire-wheel-adventure-shootout). I bought my 2014 Tenere non ES for a 2 up touring bike but it's height caused problems for my wife getting on and off. It's top heaviness was even worse when riding double. I am not at all interested in riding a 600 pound motorcycle off road. My KLR was bad enough. But for me adventure bikes do make good touring bikes.

Watched both videos and it seems like their biggest beef was the S10 felt heavy, on the road and in the dirt. I wonder how review would go if you loaded them all to the lowest max capacity, and did a "work horse" test. Exhaust sound... Really?! Get a Harley.. Also noted they use MSRP pricing in comparisons. Realistically, you can get major discounts with the S10 that you won't get on the expensive European bikes. The Tenere has its compromises but in my book it is fully adventure capable and a great value.

Is it really that top heavy compared to others, though? Well, opposit engine does have lower CoW, but others?

The review of the bikes kinda reminds me of movie reviews. Just because the "pros" don't like it, doesn't mean it's bad. Some of my favorite movies ever received crappy reviews. And NONE of my favorite movies EVER won an Oscar. Is independent thought great or what?!

Many years ago when BMW had come out with a new bike I read many rave reviews. Went and took one for a test ride and didn’t like hardly anything about it, other than about the first year that bike never sold very well at all. It’s good to read reviews but don’t rely to much on what they say.

What are examples of the high tech features of other bikes that the ST lacks? The second gen ES seems pretty loaded to me.
I was thinking the same thing. This bike has more than enough features. Funny thing is I never realized how much I would enjoy the electronic suspension. Amazing comes to mind!

Things like TFT screens, more ride modes, lean angle TCS or ABS??? Things we would expect on a Gen 3. This model is 5 years old...

I test rode some of those feature loaded bikes and was not impressed in the least. The KTM 1190 had the horsepower and all those fancy do dads. Nice bike but could not see myself using half those features. The Ducati Enduro was a mass confusion of scrolling through a very complicated menu to get the riding mode you wanted. I'm very thankful I test rode it though. The ergonomics were so poor I could not ever modify it to fit me. My back was screaming after only 20 minutes in the saddle.

TFT screens are still developing and have reliability issues. Lean angle TCS and ABS are nice safety features but I'm not a fast enough rider to take advantage them. The Super Tenere has more than enough TCS and ABS control to accelerate/trail brake the corners at a pretty good clip. Anything faster would only be good for the race track.

IMO, Yamaha has the perfect balance of cool features that the average rider can really enjoy and get use out of for everyday riding. My biggest wish for the Gen 3 would be upgraded suspension and brakes (steel braided lines and upgraded MC's), and a button to easily shut off just the rear brake ABS. Other than that, BNG is fine by me.

Do you like the bike you're riding? Yes? Then why do you care about what anyone else thinks about it? Worrying about these kind of comparison things is a waste of time that could be used riding!

The Super Ténéré makes decent power, but its exhaust note is uninspiring, and was I the only one who noticed just how much top-end clatter this particular twin produces?”

Top-end clatter - Whaaaat? I keep my ear plugs in and I don't hear no stinking top-end clatter.....
