Bearing questions

I've researched this through the forum and I think I've gotten some conflicting info, so I wanted to consolidate it here and see if anyone can help. I'm going to buy some wheel bearings from a bearing supplier for the S10, and I want to make sure I'm getting the right ones. I'm attaching this chart, and I'm hoping someone can offer some guidance if I have any of the bearing numbers wrong or incomplete. If anyone wants to offer the bearing numbers from bearings they've actually bought, and the bearings fit, feel free. Also, if anyone wants to recommend a bearing supplier, that would be great too. Are the bearing numbers consistent from supplier to supplier, or do they use their own code numbers unique to their company?

A bearing supply house will be looking at the bearing dimensions, which will be marked on the bearing itself. There are also codes that indicate type of seals. 2RS = 2 Rubber Seals.

The FSM doesn't say what size the bearings are.

Thanks Eric. I knew about the letter codes on bearings, which was one of the questions that came up in my research. Some of the info would indicate that you needed a bearing identified as "60/22DG" and another person would say it should be a "60/22 2RS". The DG code isn't even identified in that link you provided, which makes me think it's a designator that's specific to a manufacturer.

I have the service manual, and yes, it's no help when it comes to sizing an aftermarket bearing. Even knowing the actual bearing size won't give me complete info, since some bearings are sealed on one side and some on both, and I don't know which one I need. I'm sure it's easier to just order the OEM part number, but they are about twice the price of a bearing sourced from a supplier. If I can get specific, accurate bearing nomenclature (like from someone who's actually bought them and installed them), then I'd like to go that route and save some cash.

I would suggest just stock yamaha bearings. Made in Japan and good quality. “Overall”

My front wheel never needed replacing at 130K miles. I changed the rear bearings at around 90K with All Balls and they didn't make 20K before shitting the bed. And I greased them prior to installation. YMMV.

I'd get 2RS and then if you really want to, removing a seal is easy enough. Not done the S10 yet, but all my other bikes get 2RS for the wheels and cush drives whether they were stock or not.

Sorry, I don't have any experience replacing bearings on the S10, so can't comment on the accuracy of those sizes and model numbers. I've personally not had a wheel bearing go bad. At 109k miles of multi-surface use, my wheel bearings on the '12 S10 were still smooth. The only Yamaha wheel bearings I've replaced were on my FJR at 149,950 miles or so. Sure, I was pissed that they didn't last to 150k, but that's life. ;) I replaced those with Yamaha bearings.

Typically I do use bearing supply houses for things like this. Knock the old bearings out, take them with me after writing down the numbers, talk to the guy at the bearing supply shop about how they are being used and listen to what he says about potential upgrade options.

You learn some interesting info talking to those guys. Like how surprised they were at the size of the BMW wheel bearings for the application. Basically saying they were way too small for the load and also the cheapest crap bearings available. Those only lasted 30k and the BMW shop was amazed at that, saying they normally fail around 20k. :rolleyes: That's one reason of many I don't buy BMW. Too bad for me the wife does.

I replaced the fronts on mine with KBC or FAG. Cant remember which (probably FAG) but I remember they were the same size as in your list. Very common size for bike front wheel bearings I believe

I've never done the rears but I think there are people selling kits for the S10 on ebay (aftermarket ones). I wouldn't buy genuine ones personally. Too pricey and in my humble opinion both FAG and KRC are excellent quality. I've done over 60,000 miles on FAG bearings before now

I’ve done a few bike bearings, but not on my s10 (yet). SKF or FAG bearings are great. I usually use 2RS, for some reason my old vstrom rear OEM bearing had a seal on one side only, not a great design for a bike that sees off road duty. I’ve used 2RS bearings on sport bikes at ludicrous speeds without an issue. One thing I did notice is better fuel mileage with new bearings. About 1.5 litres/100km, on a Cbr 1100. The old bearings were still smooth, and I only changed them as for preventative maintenance.

Has anyone tried ceramic bearings? I’m intrigued because they offer lower resistance than conventional steel bearings. I heard that MotoGP bikes use them.
