Hi there,
my name is Peter from Baravia, Germany. First you must excuse my English but when I was born there was no internet. I accidantly came over this site while surching searching for informations for my planned motorbike trip from Perth to Brisbane. When you click on my bike site (is actually undergoing a revise) you will see some of my bikes I had. For more than 20 years enduros were our passion. Am not sure how to handle it with the bike. Buying in Germany - plenty of time for preparations - shipping to Perth. Or buying in Perth - little time for preparations - no idea where to get spares and equipment - no idea about registration, prices, paper work, etc. I am experienced in fixing up a bike (do it as a hobby my hole life), worked in a tire workshop (passionate tire fetishist) and am used to ride a bike from petrol station to petrol station. I am thinking about getting a XTZ 750 or XRV 750 (both I had) or BMW R80/100 GS (had a R1150 GS Adventure).
There is no rush, just starting with a vision, don´t know when to go to Australia (your sommer or winter), everything open. Would be very glad to get some usefull informations about a start in Perth. Best would be a bed free of costs + workshop for my preparations + someone who can assist in town.
When you reply please type slowly - I am not the youngest anymore.

Hi Peter

Firstly you do not want to be in the centre of Australia in the summer its far to hot, 45 + deg C .

Worth a thought though would be DR650 / KLR 650 you will find prepared versions for sale which with a little less weight and good fuel consumption would do the job nicely or DRZ 400 which many of the stations out there use.

I don't know about shipping your own bike, I did meet an Italian guy who was wandering around on an Africa Twin but was here for a good while as part of a world trip. I presume you'd need a carnet.

Buying a GS or Tenere is likely to be expensive and selling it at the end a hit and miss process, where as the DR/KL/DRZ route will see a good bike for less than A$6000 probably prepared , good GS100s will sell for way more and Tenere / GS 1150 / 1200 even more again, GS1100 may be an option though if you want the bigger bike. There is also the option of hire which for a reletivly short time may be viable given shipping costs or the buy sell gamble.

A few websites below may be of help, please excuse if I have typed a little quickly, you may be able to get over this by reading more slowly

Hi Peter

And welcome! What Roge said x 2..... me personally, from what I've seen, experienced & read I would go the DR650, plenty of them around ready to go!
If I was going to cover that sort of geographical area I would definitely get in touch with the guys on below link as well.....they would have some tips for sure.
Good luck, hope you have a beaut time here in Aus.

Hi there,
found some interesting bikes in OZ like Kawasaki KLR 650, Yamaha XTZ 660, Suzuki DR 650 and Honda XR 650 R (my favourite). Are there major differences between old and newer models? Are bigger tanks (+/- 26 ltr.) available? Acerbis Italia make a 24 ltr. main tank for the XR 650 R, IMS in US make a 7 gal. (26,5 ltr.). The XR 650 R is very sporty, the XTZ 660 is made for long distance riding - less sporty etc. etc.
P.S. What is the fuel consuption on these bikes like? E.g. on the KLR 650 with 22 ltr.

Look up safari tanks they have 28-32lt tanks for most of the bikes mentioned previously which should give a safe 600 km you would also need to carry water
