I’m getting confused now. The manual says the battery is a yausa yt12s which according to the yausa web site is an acid battery (doesn’t actually mention lead though) it doesn’t say it’s a lypo or lithium type battery.
For my part, I just want to know how to charge the damned thing!

To change the battery you remove the covers off the right side of the bike to access it, then it's standard battery replacement. The original battery is a AGM you can not put standard lead acid battery in the Tenere the position doesn't allow it.

So are these AGM batteries like lypo or lithium? Do they also need a special charger or can I use my optimate 3?

I have the NOCO Genius G3500 charger. It has:

12v Small Norm
12v Small Cold/AGM
12v Lithium

It appears AGM has to be charge differently than both lead acid and Lithium

It has a lower full charge voltage

Searched AGM
One of the most-commonly asked questions we hear relates to what "AGM" means on battery chargers. The short answer is that AGM stands for "Absorbed Glass Mat," which is a specific type of lead-acid battery.

So I’m now clear about what is needed for the S10 battery.
It is a AGM battery and the optimate 4 is recommended for continuous charging of these batteries. So that’s what I’m going for.

You got it. To summarize what others wrote, Replace the YT12 with a 14 for more Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) in the same size battery. That battery is an AGM, which simply is a version of lead acid that can be installed without worrying about acid spilling out of the top. Pretty much any charger will do unless the charger specifically says it is ONLY for Lithium.

A lot of us have put an external fused SAE connector on the bike so you don't need to remove the panels to charge the battery. The SAE connector shape is used for mini air pumps, with adapters for heated clothes, and has other uses too.

Thanks. Yep I have one of those connectors fitted already. Battery seems fine at the moment but when it’s time to replace it I’ll go for the 14. I’ve only just replaced the oem battery on my Zx14r as it was 7 years old! Always plugged into an optimate when not in use.

Can someone give me some advise? I’m about to drop $200 for A Shorai Lithium Battery LFX19A4-BS12 unless someone can tell me different. It seems to be the best value I can find for my 12 S10

CYLA14BSXTA is the Battery Plus stock number for the YT-14 with a 12 warranty. $94.99, and if you order online, and pick-up in store, there's a 10% discount. AS CW advised, a regular Battery Tender will work with it. Oddly enough, the YT-12 has a 24 month warranty. This is where I'm going when mine fails. That's my two cents.

Since you asked . . .

The best value and what has been repeatedly found to work down into freezing temps is the AGM ytz14s with 230cca to replace the OEM ytz12s.

I got the EarthX. I won't say it's the best value. I will say the brand has been the most reliable though. I have my same EarthX in my Beta since new in 2012. There has been times it's sat for months and it has never failed to start. In freezing cold, you simply let the key cycle and wait a few seconds for the battery to warm up.

For my Super Tenere I got the ETX36C. You get what you pay for. OTOH, a YTZ14 is really a great bang for the buck. Just don't expect it to last much more than 4 or 5 years. Less if you are banging around off road.
