I think most battery maintainers like the Battery Tender, have desulfating cycles built in. No need to spend a ton of $$.

well thanks for your reply, I did look at the Battery Tender brand website but didn’t notice Desulfator mentioned anywhere, which model Battery Tender do you think is capable of Desulfating ?

I have a Battery Tender Jr for my bike, and I couldn't find anywhere in the spec sheet for that model that mentioned desulfation. Truthfully, I could probably use one of these more for my Camry than my bike; the bike gets used a lot, and the car tends to sit for weeks sometimes.

OldRider, what model CTEK do you have?
Look no further than NOCO. Great do-it-all chargers (desulfator) in many different amp sizes. I have a brand new GENIUS 2 that I just picked up last week and I also have an older GENIUS 3500. Highly recommended!

Thanks MFP. Question though: does the NOCO you bought have the sort of two pin connector attachment that's standard with a Battery Tender Jr? I have the two pin pigtail attached to my battery so the Battery Tender can be used. It's a pain in the ass to remove the side panel that covers the battery with the Altrider crash bars I have, so the pigtail makes it a lot easier.

Edit: Whoops, never mind. I just looked a little further down on the Amazon page, and I see the adapter. Thanks!

I believe the GB40 is strictly a jump starter and a recharger for personal devices.

Keep in mind that 2 AMPS (as recommended by YUASA) is all you really need for powersport type batteries regarding charging/maintaining/desulfation.

Has anyone here ever used a Desulfator ? I have been considering buying one to use on motorcycles, ATV, cars and tractors.
The prices range from about $50 to $160, the higher priced ones put out more amps, which one would you choose ?

Sorry Cycledude,
When I did the reply on my cellphone earlier I was pretty sure I tagged you as well:

Interesting, perhaps I’m wrong about the Battery Tender having a desulfation cycle. Could have sworn I read or heard that somewhere. I’ve dropped them a question about this.

My battery tender is an older model and for sure does nothing but charge, and even that is rather lackluster to say the least. I've put a voltmeter across it while charging, and it never gets close to 14.5v to properly charge a new battery, and in storage mode stays up about 13.4v which is a little too high to keep plugged in for weeks on end.
I also have a Pulsetec charger that is supposed to have desulfate, and I can read on a meter the volts pulse up to a higher level. I guess this is supposed to desulfate. I haven't had a weak battery that either charger improved performance, and have decided keeping hooked up all the time neither charger extends battery life, actually I believe battery life was less.
I still like my old 2A Century charger I bought 30yrs ago at Wards works better, but the best charger is a 0-5A adjustable lab power supply. You can buy various Chinese units for $50 or so. Dial in your own amps and volts.

I think you would love a Tecmate Optimate model 3 or 4. I picked up four of the discontinued model 3+ a couple years ago to replace my old battery maintainers and was blown away at how it has brought back several batteries from near death to be strong batteries. I use a couple smaller model BatteryMINDer Pluses at my Motorcycle school for my 16 training bikes and they also seem to be doing a pretty good job on bikes that only get used for 5 months a year.

I've been using the Techmate/Optimate 3 since 2004. I upgraded to a X4 bank version when I got married in '12 so I could plug all the bikes in. I just leave the bikes plugged in when ever they are not being ridden. We mostly ride often, but not so much this last year.

I have seen the desulfate light come on a few times. My '04 FJR battery was still doing great at 9 years and 162k miles when I sold it. The desulfate process occured three times that I know of, the first time I plugged it in when the bike was about a year old, once again about 5 years later and a third time just prior to my selling the bike at 9 years.

I definitely improves battery life to have a desulfate process built into the maintenance charger. Techmate/Optimate chargers use the standard SAE two pin plug now. My original version from '04 had a plain two pin plug that was not SAE. I eventually changed it over to a SAE when the plug became damaged one day. NAPA and many other auto parts stores sell SAE plugs pre-wired in a loop.

Pretty reasonably priced on Amazon - LINK You can use your Battery Tender pigtail or any other fused SAE pigtail, or install the one that comes with the charger.
