Bad paintjob

I just discovered that the paint on the frame is bad in one small spot around the middle of the frame (the pipe through the frame, above shaftdrive in engine end)
I have contacted the Yamaha dealer a few days ago, with describtion and these 2 pictures.
And he just told me today, that he have to look at it in person, but it really looks like a warranty "case" (bought it this spring, and 6000 km).
If the will be accepted as a warranty, which he is pretty sure of, Yamaha actually was prepared to order a new frame to me ::008:: I was surprised to hear this, I was expecting, that I had to press hard, to even get a bucket of paint.. :D

I did say "no thanks" to this, because of 2 things. First, some mechanic would have to move everything over to the new frame, and second, the new frame will come to Denmark with NO VIN number, and it will have to be "stamped" here in Denmark, with the same number as the old frame, and this will never look good, and might look like somebody have been chaeting with the VIN number.

So we aggread upon, that he will arrange transport to the dealer, when he for some other reason have a car nearby (there is already salt on the road in my part of Denmark), and when he accept the case as warranty, he will send it to be painted at a professional painter, and when finish, transport back to me ::012::

In my opinion, this is great service ::026::

Normal... I have same issue and just removed the flakey paint and hit it with a good Rust Paint.
I used Kill Rust Matt Black.

Hey Nikolagsen, as Gigitt pointed out, this seems quite normal and there has been worse cases of this, best to take the plugs out of both sides and clean them up and repaint them yourself, the add grease and secure the plugs back in place, I thought about siliconing it but that would probably bring it's own issues....

Rustoleum has a metallic paint that is very close. If anything it has a touch more gloss and the flakes are slightly bigger. It also is thicker and sticks better than what the factory uses.
#7250 Black Night Metallic

My trailer hitch drawbar is painted with it so you can see how close the colors are where the footpeg pieces come together. When I do winter maintenance, I'll wire brush the surface rust off of the knicked areas and touch them up with the Rustoleum.

Thanks for reply. ::012::
When this is "normal" it is very strange that my dealer and Yamaha Nordic (Denmark Sweden and Norway), say to my that they never have seen this befor...they must have short memory ;) :D
And also strange why Yamaha don't have some repair paint, that can be bought as sparepart, and for something like this, with a new bike, just send to costumer.
I would have been satisfied, with just a small can of paint.
But now that they are willing to offer a professional paint job on me, I think I will let them. :)

Thanks for the "code" and picture of the paint that is very close to original, I will try to locate it here in Denmark, just for next time ::)

Once repainted, hit it and other rust susceptible areas with some ACF-50.

I cannot speak for Denmark but in the US most good body shops have moved to 2K or moisture cure urethanes. These are greatly superior to aerosol touch ups in cans. I think having it professionally done is a good option

good luck with it

my frame rusted there. The dealer performed a "localized repair" under warranty. Area was cleaned, treated with a rust killer, primed and repainted.

Exactly what I did, it's normal to rust there.

Stamping a VIN into a new frame sounds problematic (breaking through the paint/coating) unless they are doing the stamping on a pre-attached tag.

Is this mostly considered merely a cosmetic issue, or is the spot of rust a worry in a more drastic way? If I saw the rust spot on mine I might touch up with a small brush and black paint, but most likely just ignore it. I doubt the frame will rust out like an old 1962 Dodge, but I could be wrong.

Odd timing. I just popped the rubber plugs out of mine after a recent bath and saw a little rust on one side.

I have Rumbux Bars that have suffered from my poor riding skills. I went to Walmart and they have Rustoleum paint in an approximately 1/2 pint can. It is for bare metal use. I bought the flat black (it is really matte) and it matches the frame paint and the Rumbux bars almost perfectly. The can was maybe $5.00. Experience with this paint on the frame rails of my ATV indicates it works very well.

Thirty seconds and now my frame rust looks like new again. My moto-vanity is restored.

For many years, only cosmetic. But of course, suddenly the metal will be gone :(

By the time it actually causes any issues if at all your bike will be gone.
If you live in a wet climate or salty roads as i can imagine Denmark being, have it professionally done.
Now that's one heck of a Yamaha rep replacing the whole upper frame for a small spot of rust.

I found rust in the same place on mine when it was less than a year old.
Never considered contacting the dealer to have it fixed - just cleaned the area for rust and re-painted it...

My frame had the same problem a couple of years ago. I did the rattle can fix and greased the plug and stuck it back in. All is good. While I was at it. I notice a little rust around the bottom edge of my tank. When I pulled the rubber strip off the edge. It was covered in rust and the paint was off about 8 inches long.

There is now a clear picture.
This is a week spot regarding painting on ST10, worldwide.
(makes sense because all S10 are built in Japan, on same factory ::008:: )
