Avon tire choice

Avon AV54 Trail Riders going on tomorrow front and rear. the original tires have about 6500 miles on them. I could push for a a few more mile, but it isn't worth it.
Thanks for all the interesting posts that kept me in analysis paralysis for so long while trying to pick a new tire.

1) I almost went for the Bridgestone AV40 since my experience with the origianl equiment BW tires was good. I just wished they lasted a little longer. I have never had a tire last 6500 miles before, but with K60 reports of over 13K miles, 6500 seems low (analysis paralysis).
2) I didn't want K60s because I use this for daily rider on pavement. I would like to go someplace where I could play with TC off, but it has not been convenient. K60 owners seem to say "be careful on wet pavement." More than I am already?
3) There were some value tires that seemed like a good choice, but I can't believe that shinko 805s would be comfortable for this old guy even if they go 10K miles.
4) The family that tours the world and has Avon sponsorship says these tires will out perform any tire in any situation. We'll see. Wish I had a sponsor ship. Anyhow these tires look like they'll be good on the asphault and maybe a tad better that Battlewings if I ever find some dirt.

I am really liking mine, KevinFH, dry, wet, slush and snow, the grip and traction is grand and the roll over is excellent.....
What kind of mileage do you have on them? Any front cupping showing so far? Thanks.

Seeing prices on Jake Wilson dot com and a few others these Trail Riders are priced ok and sure sound like they should be a good tire on our Super T's.
I have a ride up to Vermont, Quebec City and on to Nova Scotia planned for mid summer. The his just may be the tire for that trip.

OK, my Avon Trail Rider (rear) lasted 5500 miles. I enjoyed the ride, but not more than the Battle Wing. My new Battle Wing is in the garage.
The Avon front has lasted longer than the OEM front tire. Lots of life left.
It may just be that I am getting to know the bike better and am hitting the throttle a little harder, while just not finding the need to test the brakes so much as when the bike was new.
Anyhow, I will be sticking with bridgestone BW in the future unless my riding requirements change.

I’ve just replaced my Avon TrailRider rear with another. The old tyre lasted 4700 miles squaring of and about 3 mm left in the centre band.
Disappointed with the mileage but can’t fault the ride on this tyre. Confidence inspiring with no real issues of grip in any conditions. Not really an off road tyre but able to cope with loose stuff and a bit of shallow mud conditions. These tyres suit the bike and don’t forget that Avon used the S10 as a test bike during there development.
I’ve fitted the second TrailRider as I like the tyre and have a new front in stock for when the Annakee 2 needs replacement. I had considered the Avon Trekrider but you can’t mix a cross ply with a radial. I have another set of wheels which have E07’s fitted for playing off road. All in all the TrailRider is a brilliant tyre just a little disappointed with the life. But having said that the grip is tremendous so that for me is the reason for continuing with the brand and model.

Soooo....in the article that CW linked, they were getting 15k miles on the Avon rear tire. But, the posters here are getting less than half of that. Am I correct in assuming that no pavement, which means inherently slower speeds, is the reason for the difference?

I was recently tire shopping for my next set and kept going back to that article. Don't know why but if you search here and on ADV you find that most people aren't making anywhere near 10,000 miles with the Avons. I ended up staying with the Mitas E07.

I hardly ever do off road, but looking at the roads in that article, knobbies make sense to me. Off road tires for off paved roads? Right?

I have about 1500 miles on my Trailriders. So far, showing no wear whatsoever. They're great on pavement and gravel.

I just installed a set of Trail Riders to try something different and because I couldn't find a new Mitas E07 after losing one on a trip.

So far, I absolutely love how much smoother they are as road tires and the traction on twisty southern Ohio backroads was very confidence inspiring. When they do start to lose traction it's progressive and not just a release. Another nice feature is how quiet they run, both upright and leaned over. The tread pattern is similar to a Tourance so I am not expecting much for mud performance (probably a bit better due to wider grooves) and will have to report back to let you guys know what kind of life they get.

A few years ago I bought two rear Avon Cobras for my Goldwing, they seemed like nice great handling tires but the first one developed a split right dead center with only 8,000 miles so that tire went in the junk.
The second one did the same thing at 9,000 miles but actually went flat about 10 miles from home while parked at a McDonald’s, I rode it flat for about 1 block to a air compressor and pumped it up and rode home, the next morning it was flat again and that’s when I noticed the split just like the first one, no more Avon tires for me.

Avon was about the only brand that makes tires for my 'ol FJ. 16", non-cruiser, tires are getting hard to find.

Keep an eye on the rear tire i destroyed one in 1900 miles on mine just riding as i usually do. Replaced it with a Dunlop Trailmax. I still have the front on and its fine. Got about 5000 mls on it and still looks good. Might have had a bad one. Never got less than 6000 mls out of a tire on this bike. I run them down to the recommended wear marks of before if im on a trip.
